Treehugger 5K

The family-friendly 1K, which runs immediately before Kids Unplugged, makes a loop through Irvine’s amazing meadows, and finishes with kid-friendly relay races and other green games. John Matthews (Dwayne Johnson: Journey 2: The Mysterious Island) is living lush with his new wife and young daughter. Well connected, well dressed and wealthy, he’s the American dream.     John’s son Jason (Rafi Gavron: Celeste and Jesse Forever) isn’t quite so happy. Bitter over the divorce of his parents, Jason reviles his father and his money. In a moment of petulance and idiocy, he agrees to have a large bag of Ecstasy sent to his mother’s house.

Laugh your way out of winter with this play

The British have been stereotyped as stodgy. The truth is that they are quite bawdy and irreverent. The plays of Ray Cooney — including It Runs in the Family, now playing at 2nd Star Productions — are typical British humor.     The British love a farce where nothing is sacred or above ridicule. In It Runs in the Family that includes the clergy, police, doctors and matrimony. “If you tell a lie, make it a whopper,” an actors says in words that could be this play’s subtext.

Wild Edibles: Delicious in a Jar

Event Date:  April 14, 2013 - 9:00am - 12:00pm Did you know your own backyard is a treasure trove of tasty treats? Take a hike through Irvine Nature Center in search of nature’s delicacies and learn the basics of home canning in this exciting workshop! With Naturalist Sara Mills you will learn proper plant identification, preparation and other important tools for safely enjoying wild edibles. Then, come into our kitchen for a short course on canning taught by jelly master Beth Lacey Gill. By the end of our time you’ll be prepped for when spring and summer bounties show up that need preserving.

Where Do the Children Play?: Film Screening & Conversation

Event Date:  April 12, 2013 - 6:45pm - 9:00pm Join us for this inspirational one-hour documentary, Where Do The Children Play?, that examines how restrictive play opportunities are impacting children’s mental and physical health and development. A discussion with leading education experts will follow. Refreshments and a take-home goody bag for parents also provided. Bats & Bacardi

Beekeeping Basics: How to Start Your Own Hive

Event Date:  March 16, 2013 - 9:00am - 4:00pm Honey bees are fascinating to watch, and beekeeping is a great family activity. Plus, honeybees make gardens and fruit trees more productive, and the honey they produce is delicious! This 2-session course will cover everything you need in order to have thriving bees from the start, including equipment, honey bee biology, dealing with stings, year-round management, swarm control, diseases and honey extracting. Great for beginning and intermediate beekeepers, or anyone generally interested in honey bees.
