Beekeeping Basics

Event Date:  March 15, 2014 (All day) Honey bees are fascinating to watch, and beekeeping is a great family activity. Plus, honeybees make gardens and fruit trees more productive, and the honey they produce is delicious! This 2-session course will cover everything you need in order to have thriving bees from the start, including equipment, honey bee biology, dealing with stings, year-round management, swarm control, diseases and honey extracting. Spring Volunteer Naturalist Training

Movin’ in the Meadow: Nature Fitness Semester

Event Date:  February 3, 2014 (All day) Moms, forget the gym! Instead, hit the trails – and yes, you can wear your baby! We will stretch, hike and get our hearts pumping all while enjoying Irvine’s tranquil setting. This program is for adults, expecting moms, or adults with young children. Volunteer Naturalist Training: Maple Sugaring

Event Date:  January 28, 2014 (All day) Maple sugar making has been an early spring activity for centuries. This 2-session course will equip you to lead preschool and elementary-aged students on maple sugaring school field trips at Irvine. Learn how to recognize maple trees in winter, how to tap the trees to collect the sap, and how to boil down the sap down into maple syrup and candy. Delicious in a Jar: Caramel Apple Jam

After this short course, taught by jelly master Beth Lacey Gill, you'll be prepped for some practice canning before spring and summer bounties show up and need preserving.
