Fur, Fluff and Fun

SPCA’s annual Walk for the Animals

Dogs of every shape, size and breed — along with their equally diverse human companions — took to the trails at Quiet Waters Park May 6. The overcast skies and cool temperatures made it a pleasant morning for the 27th annual Anne Arundel County SPCA’s Walk for the Animals.
Mutts and pure-breds alike joined the 5K run and walk for charity. Bay Weekly’s own animal-loving staff (and huskies Misty and Stella) were on hand to support the largest and oldest animal welfare organization in the county.
Veterinarians, groomers and other pet-care related vendors filled a parking lot and offered goodies to dogs and people. Local rescue organizations provided educational materials and information on pet adoption.
Dogs weren’t the only furry friends getting attention. The SPCA brought adoptable cats and rabbits to the event, and at least one goat was sighted.
Not every animal at the event was a pet. Some were working professionals. Annapolis Police K-9 units gave demonstrations, and McGruff the Crime Dog posed for photos.
Food trucks, a bake sale staffed by the SPCA volunteers and the Cars & Critters car show added to the festivities and kept the crowds happy.
Animal lovers will have more frisky opportunities to support SPCA this summer with the Dog Days of Summer Cruise on July 19 and the Puppy Plunge at Camp Letts on August 19, noon-3pm.
