Holiday Windfall
The holidays came a little early this year for some 45,000 Anne Arundel County Public Library patrons. With the generosity of a converted Ebenezer Scrooge, all overdue fines accumulated between September 24 and December 14 have been waived.
“We are happy to offer this gesture of goodwill to our customers who patiently stood by us during our recent cyber attack,” said Library CEO Hampton ‘Skip’ Auld.
Victim to the Emotet virus, the library was forced to shut down public computers in October. Additionally, printing, faxing, copying and scanning ceased. The 16 branch libraries remained open for programs, books, CDs and DVDs and community gatherings.
“Despite huge hurdles, library staff continued to provide exemplary customer service,” Auld said. “Using their creativity and persistence, these hardworking library professionals adeptly served our customers, because we know how much residents depend on us for information, education and inspiration.”
During the restoration, many customers did not receive overdue notices; thus the waiver of fines. This action does not apply to fines for lost or damaged materials or charges before September 24.
Nearly $20,000 in fines have so far been waived. If you paid overdue fines incurred during the cyber attack, you can ask your branch for a credit to your account.
