Scholarship Corner (June 6-12, 2019)

Graduation days aren’t the only good news for five lucky — and on-the-ball — local kids. Scholarships from the Annapolis Musicians Fund for Musicians and South Anne Arundel Lions Club are making college a little more affordable.

At its annual Scholarship Dinner and Awards night at Pirates Cove Restaurant, the Lions Club, assisted by a West River Improvement Association $1,000 donation, awarded four $1,000 scholarships to students in South County high schools. The scholars are Fatou Gai and Kayla Jones from CAT South, Cyrus Johnson from Southern High School and Jamie Wood from South River High School.

The Annapolis Musicians Fund for Musicians awarded its second Tim King Music Scholarship of $5,000 to Archbishop Spalding High School senior Abigail Michaels. An accomplished oboist, she’ll study at Indiana University Bloomington Jacobs School of Music

Scholarships are awarded on several criteria, including participation in music performance groups, volunteer music opportunities in their communities and private lessons.

The fund also provides financial relief to professional Annapolis musicians who cannot work due to sickness, injury or other circumstances. It raises funds through donations and through music events that showcase local professional talent, including its In the Vane of … music series, which continues with a Motown show Monday, June 10 at Rams Head On Stage: www.am-fm.org.
