Osprey On Highway to Tropics

Traffic is heavy and slow on the Osprey Highway to the Tropics, as my colleague Mark Martell calls Florida, Cuba and Hispaniola. We currently have one transmitter-carrying bird, Saco, in Florida; three — North Fork Bob, Snowy and Buck — in Cuba; and Katbird and Senor Bones in the Dominican Republic. Osprey Winter Update

Dear Bay Weekly: Greetings from an iced-in Charlotte. Typical winter mess down here. Snow, then rain, which all froze, so you can ice skate down our street. All our [transmitter-tagged] osprey are down in much warmer places, and they’re all doing fine. I updated all the maps through the end of 2010. Just a couple of months before the adults head north! Continuing the Osprey Saga

Dear Bay Weekly: The Cape Henlopen Hawk Watch [http://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=169] has had a couple of days with counts over 100, so the young and males are now moving south. Most of the females have probably already made it through to South America. Three of our [tagged] birds are moving. Actually four if we include Buck, our South Carolina young from ’09, who surprised us by moving his bivouac down in Venezuela. Sr. Bones from Nantucket is our first adult to head south....
