Climate stewards take aim at ­herbicides, tout healthy soils 
      It takes good soil for plants to grow healthy and vibrant. It takes brave souls to push for better legislation to make that happen.      Last year, environmentalists and organic farmers scored a win when the Maryland Legislature passed the Healthy Soils Program and Gov. Larry Hogan signed the bill. The program works to sequester the global-warming bad guy, carbon, in Maryland soil while increasing its biological activity.

     As the temperature drops, Chesapeake Country’s needy citizens depend on our help to stay warm.        Aha! you might think: Time to get ride of all my old clothes. Not if you want to do some good. Before you take your worn jeans and old T-shirts to donation boxes, the charity-driven folks at Hope For All suggest you think about the needs of people in need.
What We’re Thinking in Chesapeake Country Anne Arundel shifts from economy to crime and drugs       Crime and drugs are the most important problem facing Anne Arundel County, according to an October survey of 655 countians by the Center for the Study of Local Issues at Anne Arundel Community College. Nearly a third, 31 percent, call those threats their biggest issues.

      If there’s any day to bridge the gaping American divide, it’s Thanksgiving. On that great American feast, consensus rules. Eighty-eight percent of us report that turkey will be our Thanksgiving dish of choice, according to the National Turkey Federation. Certainly for me, one of the great pleasures of the day is the near unanimity of sharing in one great meal, all across the nation.

       You know the season has changed when you look across the sprawling fields of the Walter family farm, dotted brilliant orange with autumn’s signature crop: pumpkins.          There Nick Walter is happily knee-deep in his element, harvesting the fruit of his labor.

     Ah, October has returned. That means ghouls and goblins, pumpkins and apples, flannel and bonfires. The air is seemingly crisper with each passing week, and specks of red and yellow are beginning to adorn the trees. Leaf-peeping fever is right around the corner.

Mr. Boh presents a check to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation

       All hot summer long, Baltimore’s Natty Boh gathered tabs and cash to give to Maryland’s favorite crustaceans.       From June to September, Natty Boh 12- and 16-ounce cans came with red, crab-etched tabs. For every tab returned, 10 cents was donated to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s local blue crab research and habitat restoration efforts. 

Smithsonian encourages teens to dip their toes into filmmaking 

       If you’re looking for storytellers to tell tales of their love for water, ask a Chesapeake Country native.        Who’s asking for stories?         It’s the Smithsonian.       Calvert Library was selected to join the Smithsonian’s Water/Ways exhibition, a study on the significance of water in communities across the country. 

Share the road during harvest season

      With the arrival of fall, farmers from many of Maryland’s 12,300 farms take their work to the streets. The fall harvest season extends to early November. On rural roads and even highways, motorists should be prepared to share as farmers move between working fields. Along major farming routes, electronic signs help remind you to be patient with sometimes sluggish farm equipment.
