Patuxent River Keelboat Races

  Southern Maryland Sailing Association members race up the Patuxent River on weekly keelboat races. See both start and finish from the parking lot at the Chesapeake Biological Lab. 6:30pm from Solomons. Learn more: www.smsa.com.

Sailors Race Herring Bay

  Herrington Harbour Sailing Association members race their boats from Herring Bay. Get a distant view from the Rose Haven Park Below Herrington Harbour South. Bring a picnic and blanket, and, if the winds are southerly — which they usually are in the summer — you might see lots of boats with their colorful spinnakers sailing into the sunset. Start around 6:30pm, with actual race and finish in various places in the Bay depending on wind: www.hhsa.org.

Annapolis Sailboat Races

  See midweek sailboat races as typically 150 boats race from Annapolis Harbor and Spa Creek into the Bay. 6:10pm first gun at Annapolis Yacht Club or around the Harbor, Annapolis: 410-263-9279; www.annapolisyc.com.

Galesville Sailing Races

  On the West River, watch members of the Pirates Cove Race Club vie for the series’ trophies. The starting line for these races is always between the end of the Pirates Cove dock and a little buoy over in Shady Side. If you get down to the river around 5:45pm, you can have a grandstand seat on the village pier or at one of two riverside restaurants. 5:55pm at Pirates Cove Race Club, Galesville: www.pcrcwestriver.org.

Glide Parkers Creek

  American Chestnut Land Trust guides you out on Parkers Creek, where you’ll paddle thru waters in swamps to coastal salt marsh on this pristine freshwater stream. Bring water and a snack.
