Spring's ready. Are you? | Spring Home and Garden Services Guide

Find What You’re Looking for with
Bay Weekly’s Spring Home and Garden Services Guide

Lower Marlboro Nurseryowner: Mary-Stuart Sierra
While the lessons of a cold, wet winter and a hot, dry summer are fresh in mind, make this the spring you plant your garden with Maryland natives, which share our climate and have learned to thrive in it.

One of the few places in our part of Chesapeake Country where you’ll find these hard-to-come-by locals in array is Lower Marlboro Nursery. This small, privately owned retail operation offers a wide range of nursery-propagated native plants, including herbaceous perennials, aquatic plants, ferns, grasses, trees and shrubs.

Also available is a selection of unusual exotics suited to this region to serve as non-invasive companion plants for natives. You’ll find not only plants but expertise from an environmentally responsible garden-owner with long experience working with rare and uncommon native species.

Visit by appointment or at our Spring Open House, May 9, 10 and 11. (Call for hours and directions). Or order our catalogue: POB 1013, Dunkirk, MD 20754 (two-year subscription for $2; mailed in February and updated in August).

Beaux-Artes • owners: Stuart and Melanie Kershner
Beaux-Artes begins where decoration usually ends, with ceilings, pilasters, grand entrance ways, custom door and window trim and wainscotting — the architectural detailing that adds character to the room. Our interior design and custom fabrication services range from ornate plaster ceilings (done the way Michelangelo painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, on high scaffolding) and architectural panels, to artful grills for HVAC vents and recessed lights, to cabinet make-overs to fabulous faux finishing on any surface.

Our niche developed when, as interior designers, we couldn’t help but see what others overlooked: raw, broad expanses of drywall, the same tiny door trim, ugly vents and dull, industrial-looking recessed lights everywhere. So we decided to bring classic style ornamentation into the 21st century and developed a product line to adapt such styles to modern building techniques. Beaux-Artes’ unique products include decorative medallions for recessed lights and HVAC grills plus architectural panels so easy to apply we sell them in kits.

Sneade’s is your local ACE store for all your hardware and home improvement needs. Now that it’s spring, you’ll find us stocked with lawn care products and gardening supplies including decorative stone for that new walkway. P.G. Awning ~ Covers By The Bay • owner: Wayne Brechtel
One of the larger home improvements is the addition of a sunroom. For this reason, homeowners should do their homework before starting. The question is not only who will do it but will the new addition look good on the home? What size is needed to give you what you want out of the new room? And what will the room be used for during the year?

Here’s just one technicality to consider. If you want to use the room year-round, perhaps to extend the living room and possibly open it up to the house, you should consider only the most thermally efficient windows, such as vinyl-framed windows, double pane, with low-E and argon gas. These are the standards for a window appropriate for a year-round room. If the sunroom is being designed specifically for use from spring through fall, then single-pane glass windows or their equivalent should be fine.

To learn more about your upcoming sunroom expansion project, call P.G. Awning ~ Covers by the Bay.
