Bay Weekly’s Business Biographies
Running a weekly newspaper, we find that everyone has a story to tell, and that’s what you find in our pages week after week — stories of Chesapeake Bay, its people and creatures, its history and future.

And after almost 11 years, that’s what readers tell us they like best about Bay Weekly.

In that time, we’ve found that every business has a story, too. The advertisers of Bay Weekly are often small “mom and pop” businesses started by your own neighbors, people who decided it was time to live their dreams and took that leap of faith.

With businesses, we’re usually focused on goods and services, and we spend our creative energy designing ads to attract your attention and gain your support. For it’s the success of these businesses, which have taken a second leap of faith in working with Bay Weekly, that allows us to live our dream and bring you a free paper each week full of good stories.

Still, we’re regularly asked, “Why don’t you do a story about my business?” And this week, these businesses are our story.

With Bay Weekly’s Business Biographies we wanted to answer the fundamental questions in journalism — Who? What? When? Where? How? And, most important, Why?

What we found was what we expected — every business indeed has a story. And that’s not surprising, as even the law recognizes corporations (LLC’s and others, too) as individuals with personal rights and privileges.

We’ve found that asking and answering these questions has made us respect even more the people whose products and services we’ve come to know. We think you will, too, as you read the stories of the people who realized their dreams by building the businesses of Chesapeake Country.

If you’ve a story to tell, you’ll want it included in our autumn edition of Bay Weekly’s Business Biographies. Call your sales rep for more information.

a division of Exterior Concepts
Owner: Tim Severson

American Roof-Brite, a division of Exterior Concepts, is the nation’s oldest and largest roof stain removal and prevention company.

We restore the original look to your roof by removing ugly stains resulting from years of neglect and/or the build-up of algae and fungus. Our system does not utilize high-pressure washing or hazardous/poisonous products, but instead our uniquely designed high-volume, low-pressure roof-stain-removing equipment. Non-chlorine Color-Restorer helps to dissolve algae, fungus and their stains from your roof; Stain-Block algae and fungus inhibitor keeps them off for the life of the roof.

If your roof is stained and unattractive, American Roof-Brite can improve your curb appeal at a fraction of the cost of a new roof.

Richard’s Bayside Florist, Gifts & Gallery
Owners/Manager/Designer: Richard & Carol Penfield

I’ve been designing floral arrangements for more than 25 years. After 15 years in my Connecticut home town, where an elderly florist shop owner taught me the business and how to design, I worked the trade in Washington, D.C. and Annapolis before coming to North Beach.

I love the creative part of my job. I design for all occasions, including weddings and sympathy. Richard’s Bayside Florist, Gifts & Gallery also supplies fruit baskets and gift baskets as well as dish-gardens, plants and custom silk arrangements. The store has a nautical flair, with a wonderful collection of lighthouses; giftware, clocks and candles; paintings, photographs, jewelry and wood carvings by local artists; and a year-round Christmas room. Our products can be seen at events or by appointment. We have a 24-foot mobile showroom that we will set up so that customers have a greater opportunity to see and purchase Softubs and TheraSaunas — below the manufacturer’s suggested retail prices.

Vic’s Italia by the Bay
Owners Vic Daddi, Bil Shockley, Joe Frederickson

No two days are the same at Vic’s Italia by the Bay, where for eight years you’ve enjoyed Italian dishes and pizza prepared by Chef Bil Shockley — who studied at the Culinary Institute of America — and Joe Frederickson. All we serve is prepared fresh from scratch. Pizza, baked in our wood-burning pizza oven, is voted Best on the Bay by Bay Weekly readers.
We’re on Fishing Creek Marina with a banquet room for parties of 20 to 60 and a tiki bar for outdoor enjoyment.

We love our customers. Enjoy the Bay, take care of her — and stop in for a pie.

Chesapeake Arts Center

When Anne Arundel County wanted to cultivate arts entertainment and education in its northern region, the multimillion dollar renovation of a former high school gave birth to Chesapeake Arts Center. In two theaters, the Center makes room for concerts, plays and dance. It also showcases both local and national artists in performances and exhibits.

The Center also includes two dance studios, a pottery studio, woodshop and piano lab plus classroom and classes in theatre, music, visual arts and yoga. Children and adults develop their talents in the Center’s classes and shows.

Chesapeake Arts Center gives Northern Anne Arundel County a great place for doing and seeing the arts without driving to Baltimore, Annapolis or Washington.

Judith Neighoff
Realtor®, ReMax Innovations

ReMax Innovations was recently represented at its annual convention in San Diego, California, by Judith Neighoff. Judy brought home many new and unique marketing ideas to help sell homes more effectively. One idea is to feature your home on Realtor.com since 89 percent of buyers are known to search for homes online. For example, when a buyer searches for Deale, MD, Judy’s seller’s homes are instantly shown with multiple photos and links for additional information. This has resulted in over 2000 hits to Judy’s website in one week. Call Judy or visit her website for more information.

Sunrooms Plus
PG Awning/Covers By The Bay
Owner: Wayne Brechtel

One of the larger home improvements is the addition of a sunroom, so homeowners should plan ahead. Who will build it ? Will the addition look good on your home? What size will give you what you want? What will the room be used for?

Consider if you want to use the room year-round, to extend the living room or possibly open it up to the house. Then you need the most thermally efficient windows, such as vinyl-framed, double pane, with low E and argon gas.

If the sunroom will be used only from spring to fall, then single-pane glass windows or their equivalent should be fine.

To learn more about a sunroom expansion project, call Sunrooms Plus.
