Art for Warmth’s Sake

September is time to put away the beach gear and take a good look at fall and winter wear. While you make the shuffle from shorts to long sleeves, pull out gently used coats for CalvArt Gallery’s upcoming coat drive.
The early-season drive is inspired by the gallery’s exhibit Coat of Many Colors, opening September 5. Artists Mary Blumberg and Pamela Callen are supplying the color, representing emotion and thought in their playful paintings, which are not of coats. We, they hope, will supply the coats for donation to SMILE, the coalition of southern Calvert churches supporting a thrift store and food pantry in Lusby.
Bring coats to September 12’s opening reception (5 to 8pm) and enjoy colorful delicacies while browsing Blumberg and Callen’s Coats of Many Colors.
CalvArt is accepting coats from Sept. 3 through Oct. 3, when the show ends. Or drop off coats at Community Bank of the Chesapeake or the Furniture Gallery, both in Prince Frederick.
Twenty percent of sales from the show will be donated by the artists to SMILE, which offers emergency and supplementary goods and services to people in need.
“We are excited to be partnering with an organization that directly supports the needs of our neighbors in southern Calvert County,” Callen says.
