SUMMARY:ArtWorks@7th Presents: Wings and Things
DESCRIPTION:For the month of June\, Artworks@7th will host a three-artist collaborative show\, Wings and Things\, representing the freedom to move\, and soar. \nDavy Strong\, an acrylic and oil artist\, loves to capture the local flora and fauna of southern Maryland. Her art explores the bayside\, the fields\, and the living creatures within those environments. “I’ve been working with images of the wildlife I find while walking on the beach or in my garden.” \nNico Gozal has a unique process. All of his works begin with a piece of silk and colored inks. Originally from Indonesia\, he has blended his culture’s crafts with his approach to the world around him. His winged creatures include penguins\, fish\, bees\, and geese in formation. \nThe third artist is Mary Gault\, both a 2-D and 3-D artist. For the show\, expect to see detailed wood sculptures and paintings of many local birds of all sizes\, such as blue herons\, flamingos\, egrets\, and other favorites. Her attention to detail is captivating. \nOur guest artist this month is Pamela Callen\, a past member of the gallery. Beautiful\, poignant\, or striking images she has seen around the world are the reason for her painting. It is her method of communicating on some basic\, universal level with viewers. She says the gift of gab is not her strong suit\, so it is the most meaningful way to share her observations of far-flung or local places\, people\, animals or nature.

SUMMARY:Robert Freedman: Israel and Russia - A Troubled 75-year Relationship
DESCRIPTION:Robert Freedman\, Ph.D.\, Adjunct Professor at Johns Hopkins University will deliver an address titled “Israel and Russia – A Troubled 75-year Relationship” before the Baltimore Council on Foreign Affairs on Thursday\, June 22\, 2023. The program will be held on the 21st floor of the World Trade Center Baltimore\, 401 E. Pratt Street\, Baltimore\, Maryland\, 21202 at 6:00 p.m.\nIsrael celebrates its 75th anniversary this month in a state of outward strength and internal turmoil. Militarily\, it’s the strongest state in the region. Diplomatically\, it’s made major gains in its long-sought relations with Arab states. Its internal politics\, however\, have turned bitter and divisive in a public dispute over the nature of Israeli democracy.\nOn the occasion of the anniversary\, our next speaker\, Professor Robert O. Freedman\, will take a critical look at a key element of Israel’s foreign relations – its ties with Russia.\nRussia has provided military and diplomatic support to Israel’s enemies over the past 75 years\, and it’s given direct and indirect aid to terror groups that attacked Israel. Russia is now locked in an ever-closer relationship with Iran\, which seeks Israel’s destruction. Yet after Russia invaded Ukraine last year and turned to Iran to supply lethal attack drones\, Israel has sent extensive humanitarian aid to Ukraine\, but not the military aid which President Zelenskyy requested. Indeed\, since the rise of Vladimir Putin\, Dr. Freedman asserts in a new paper\, Israel has been the junior partner in the relationship\, giving Russia much more than it has received in return.\nHis thesis is carefully grounded and is well worth hearing and debating.\nProfessor Freedman is one of the leading U.S. authorities on Israel\, the Middle East\, and American foreign policy.\nHe received his B.A. in Diplomatic History from the University of Pennsylvania and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in International Relations from Columbia University. He has been an Assistant Professor of Russian History at the United States Military Academy\, Associate Professor of Political Science and Russian at Marquette University and Professor of Political Science at the Baltimore Hebrew University\, including a tenure as President of the institution. Currently\, he is a Visiting Professor at Johns Hopkins University. He is the author or co-author of twenty books. He has been a commentator on National Public Radio\, the BBC\, and the Voice of America as well as other major American news outlets. He has advised policymakers in the State Department\, the Central Intelligence Agency\, the Israeli Defense Ministry and the Israeli Foreign Ministry. He has also been called upon to serve the United States government on delegations to Moscow\, Beijing\, Uzbekistan\, and Tunis. Professor Freedman is well-known to members of the Council\, having addressed it on a number of occasions since 1981. \nReservations are required. Members may attend free of charge and membership is open to the public. Membership\, event information\, and reservations may be obtained by email (programs@bcfausa.org).
