SUMMARY:Annapolis Science Cafe: “Chesapeake Bay's Underwater Grasses: Life in the Shallows”\, by J. Brooke Landry\, Natural Resource Biologist\, MD DNR
DESCRIPTION:This Annapolis Cafe Scientifique talk will introduce you to one of the Chesapeake Bay’s most vital shallow water habitats – underwater grasses. Underwater grasses\, also known as bay grasses or submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV)\, are essential to the overall health and functioning of the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem. They provide habitat for fish and invertebrates\, food for waterfowl and other critters\, they help stabilize our shorelines\, promote good water quality\, and fight climate change! We’ll discuss some of the most recent research findings for Chesapeake Bay grasses and ways that you can get involved in the effort to protect\, conserve\, and restore them!\nBrooke Landry is an SAV ecologist at Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources and Chair of the Chesapeake Bay Program’s SAV Workgroup. Her work spans the gamut from SAV research – focused primarily on anthropogenic drivers of SAV dynamics – to restoration\, monitoring\, outreach\, and management. She runs the Chesapeake Bay SAV Watchers program\, the nascent Chesapeake Bay SAV Sentinel Site Monitoring Program\, and along with colleagues\, just recently launched the East Coast SAV Collaborative. Additional interests include social marketing as a means of environmental outreach and the advancement of women’s roles in science and management through positive collaborations and mentoring. We hope you will come in person\, but zoom info is available too; if interested in zoom or other questions\, email annapoliscafesci@gmail.com . You may reserve seats for this event at 49 West by calling 410-626-9796.
