SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture - The Real First President of the United States
DESCRIPTION:This virtual lecture with Dr. Glenn F. Williams explains and answers the question on whether Maryland’s own John Hanson\, as the first president of the United States under the Articles of Confederation\, should or should not be considered the nation’s “first president” rather than George Washington. In addition\, it will also present the argument why the federal holiday observed on the third Monday in February is not and should not be called “Presidents Day.” \nAdvance registration required.

SUMMARY:Mud to Music: Clay Flute-making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Musical instruments have helped us to communicate and express ourselves since the dawn of human culture. Learning to build and play our own musical instruments slows us down\, connects us to our bodies and to our self-expression\, and helps us to connect with a sense of wonder\, curiosity and play. In this 4 session workshop we will get an introduction to musical instruments that have been made across Central and South America for thousands of years and learn to build our own clay flutes using ancient pottery-making techniques. At the end of the course we will learn to explore and play our own unique instruments. All are welcome\, and no previous experience with clay\, instruments or music is necessary. Everyone can enjoy turning mud into music! \nSaturdays 9:30am – 12:30pm Feb 18\, 25 & Mar 4\, 18

SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture - Rise Up: Fight and Flight in Colonial American Slavery
DESCRIPTION:In December 1752\, Thomas Thistlewood\, a white Jamaican planter\, caught one of an enslaved man named Congo Sam\, trying to run away. When Thistlewood challenged him\, Congo Sam pulled a machete and ran at him. “I will kill you. I will kill you\,” he shouted. Thistlewood screamed for help but none of his watching Black workers moved to intervene. This talk\, with University of Maryland historian Dr. Richard Bell\, examines the plantation management strategies that produced such violent resistance. It also reveals that extent of slave uprisings in British North America\, using the 1739 Stono Rebellion in South Carolina as a case study\, and explores the lives of those men and women who escaped slavery by disappearing into the forests and swamps of colonial America. \nRegistration required. \nCan’t watch the lecture live? We invite you to register; all registrants will receive a link to the recording of the lecture to watch at their convenience. The lecture recording will be available for two weeks. Live closed captioning is available for all lectures.

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Annapolis: Thoughts of the Undead
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Annapolis presents: “Thoughts of the Undead\,” with William Egginton\, professor of humanities and director of the Alexander Grass Humanities Institute at Johns Hopkins University. \nThe streets are crawling with them. For at least the last decade\, it has been hard to turn on a TV in the evening or walk city streets on nights around Halloween without being overrun by zombies\, vampires\, or specters from beyond the grave. Their cultural prevalence has grown exponentially in recent years\, and it shows no sign of abating. Why are our lives so filled with the dead? Or\, better put\, why do our dead insist on staying alive? \nCome learn more about this phenomenon from William Egginton\, a scholar of horror in literature and popular culture. Professor Egginton\, who has captivated Profs and Pints audiences with his discussions of Krampus and other Christmas nightmares\, will be delivering the perfect talk for the start of the Halloween season\, a headshot that leaves you with a better understanding of both the dead and undead. \nCovering a wide selection of movies\, TV series\, and books\, Professor Egginton will discuss how modern zombies evolved from prior manifestations of the walking dead. He’ll talk about how these shambling\, mindless brain-munchers—as opposed to the Caribbean sort produced by voodoo masters—were conjured into existence by George Romero’s low-budget gore fest Night of the Living Dead\, which premiered in 1968\, a pivotal year of social and political upheaval. He’ll also discuss vampires\, the sexy\, speedy cousins of zombies\, and why they have a special relationship to modern capitalism. \nAll of these\, along with the spirits of the departed that have haunted such recent successful franchises as Paranormal Activity and The Conjuring\, offer acute insights into our social and existential condition and teach us something about what we fear\, what we are doing to our planet\, and how we treat each other. (Advance tickets: $12. Doors: $15\, or $13 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later. Please allow yourself time to place any orders and get seated and settled in.) \nImage: A still from George A. Romero’s classic 1968 zombie film Night of the Living Dead

SUMMARY:Annapolis Cafe Scientifique @ 49 West: Weather Forecast Innovation\, by Dr. Hendrik Tolman\, of NOAA’s National Weather Service
DESCRIPTION:Annapolis Cafe Scientifique (Science Café): Weather Forecast Innovation\, by Dr. Hendrik Tolman\, with NOAA’s National Weather Service. The science café is a place where people can gather to learn about and discuss a wide variety of science topics! The Annapolis Cafe Scientifique meets on the last Thursday of the month\, 6:00-7:15pm ET Jan-Oct\, currently via Zoom and in person at 49 West Coffeehouse\, Winebar and Gallery. Contact: annapoliscafesci@gmail.com. FREE but must buy something while at the talk.\nAbstract: This accuracy in weather forecast products based on improved science and engineering has been going on along the same development track since the 1950s\, when we started using computer models. However\, in the last few years there have been some structural changes in how we innovate in weather forecasting. The three structural changes that we have seen recently are using a much larger community to develop our computer models\, by making our models available to anyone who wants to work with them\, being much more focused on what people do with our forecast than on just the forecast itself\, and the shift to using Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in building the forecast tools we have.

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Annapolis: Rethinking the Universe
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Annapolis presents: “Rethinking the Universe\,” on how the James Webb Space Telescope and other instruments are changing our understanding of the cosmos and Earth\, with Jeffrey Larsen and Christopher Morgan\, astrophysicists at the United States Naval Academy. \nWe’ve entered a new age of astronomical wonder thanks to the latest generation of astronomical telescopes\, including the James Webb Space Telescope\, the LIGO/Virgo gravitational wave telescopes\, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope\, and the Dark Energy Camera. \nCome to the Graduate Annapolis hotel to learn about the scientific basis for—and the latest observational results from—the very newest and most advanced telescopes in the world. Your guides on this journey of interstellar understanding will Naval Academy observational astrophysicists Dr. Jeffrey Larsen\, who also researches planetary science and galactic structure\, and Dr. Christopher Morgan\, who also researches gravitational lensing and quasar physics. They’ll make some incredibly advanced science understandable to equip you to fully appreciate the groundbreaking discoveries being made by these new scientific instruments. \nThe two scholars will discuss how what we’re learning about what happens out there is changing our understanding of how and why things happen here. Underlying that dynamic is the so-called “cosmological principle\,” which assumes that the same laws of physics apply everywhere. Critical to nearly all the discoveries of modern astronomical science\, it means that we can use what we’ve learned from physics experiments here on Earth to interpret what we see beyond our planet\, but it also goes both ways\, meaning that what we observe in the cosmos shapes our understanding of physics here on Earth. The upshot is that the new telescopes are challenging some of our assumptions about how things around us work. \nProfessor Larsen and Professor Morgan also will offer sneak previews of advanced telescopes that will be coming online within the next decade. They’ll be donating their proceeds to the U.S. Metric Association. (Advance tickets: $12 plus sales tax and vendor fees. Doors: $15\, or $13 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later. Please allow yourself time to place any orders and get seated and settled in.) \nImage: A James Webb Space Telescope image of the Cartwheel Galaxy\, the product of a collision between a large spiral galaxy and a smaller one not pictured here. SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Annapolis: Keeping Sharks Around
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Annapolis presents: “Keeping Sharks Around\,” with David Shiffman\, marine conservation biologist\, environmental policy consultant\, and faculty research associate at Arizona State University. \nIt’s the perfect talk to gear up for this summer’s Shark Week: A deep dive into efforts to protect shark species as conveyed by an expert on the complexities of marine conservation. \nJoin marine conservation biologist David Shiffman\, an award-winning science communicator and the author of Why Sharks Matter: A Deep Dive with the World’s Most Misunderstood Predator\, as he discusses his research on shark conservation and the debates surrounding efforts to save them. \nYou learn how sharks were swimming in the oceans before the existence of dinosaurs or trees\, and have survived many global mass extinction events\, but our current day’s unsustainable fishing practices threaten them like never before. They and their relatives are in more trouble than most other vertebrate animals on Earth\, with nearly one out of species assessed as threatened with extinction on the “Red List” maintained by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. \nShiffman\, who has worked extensively with sharks\, will summarize the latest research showing which sharks are in trouble\, why they’re in trouble\, and why the loss of sharks is bad for humans. He’ll also introduce you to the world of shark conservation policy and several of its key players\, focusing on the debate between those who seek to maintain sustainable shark fisheries and those who want to ban all fishing for sharks and all sales of shark products. \nHe’ll bust myths about sharks and challenge popular ideas about shark conservation. It’s a talk what will leave you much more aware of what’s swimming around out there and much more able to make decisions that help ensure the survival of our world’s shark species. (Advance tickets: $12 plus sales tax and vendor fees. Doors: $15\, or $13 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later. Please allow yourself time to place any orders and get seated and settled in.) \nImage: A blue shark off Portugal. Photo by Diego Delso / Wikimedia Commons.
