SUMMARY:Volunteers Needed: One Million Oysters For Breton Bay
DESCRIPTION:We are proud to announce that on Saturday\, September 30th at 10:30 am Friends of St. Clements Bay\, the St. Mary’s River Watershed Association (SMRWA)\, and ShoreThing Shellfish\, LLC will be planting another one million oysters in the Breton Bay Oyster Sanctuary. \nLast year\, volunteers planted one million oysters in Breton Bay\, but to ensure a sustainable population\, we are adding another million. We will meet at Abell’s Wharf with two pleasure boats and a large barge to plant 300 bags of spat (oyster larva that has settled on shell) on oyster shell. \nBreton Bay was classified as one of 51 oyster sanctuaries in 2010. These sanctuaries were chosen because of their potential to support oyster reefs. Maryland Department of Natural Resources even chose Breton Bay to be one of the five oyster sanctuaries for large scale restoration. However\, in 2018\, they revoke that decision and decided not to restore the Breton Bay Oyster Sanctuary due to low current oyster populations. \nSMRWA believes that the low oyster populations are the exact reason to restore Breton Bay. SMRWA along with Friends of the St. Clements Bay have planted one million oysters in Breton Bay already and have seen great success. The oysters are growing and even reproducing. We hope to show the state that with a little effort\, we can restore Breton Bay with the help of oysters. Oysters provide habitat for commercial and recreation fisheries\, including the Blue Crab\, support the economy\, and improve water clarity by filtering out nutrients. \nPlease bring a life jacket and join us on September 30th to plant one million oysters in Breton Bay. We will provide gloves.

SUMMARY:State of the Rivers: Choptank
DESCRIPTION:ShoreRivers is pleased to announce the return of its highly anticipated State of the Rivers events—a series of free presentations held each spring to inform public about the current state of our Eastern Shore waterways. \nEach year\, between April—October\, ShoreRivers’ professional Riverkeepers conduct weekly tidal sampling of more than 60 sites from Cecilton to Cambridge\, then test for multiple scientific water quality parameters including dissolved oxygen\, nutrient pollution\, algae\, and clarity. These indicators reveal the overall health of our waterways and our progress toward protecting and restoring our local rivers. ShoreRivers\, statewide groups\, and national agencies use this information to track trends\, develop remediation strategies\, advocate for stronger laws and enforcement\, alert the public of potential health risks\, and inform region-wide efforts toward clean water goals. \nThe public is invited to learn more about the results of this testing\, with a focus on the Choptank River\, at this State of the Rivers presentation\, hosted by Choptank Riverkeeper Matt Pluta. Light refreshments\, including local oysters\, will be served. \nDoors open at 5:30pm for a reception of wine\, beer\, and light appetizers. The formal presentations will begin at 6pm. \nThe public is invited to learn more about the results of this testing\, with a focus on the Chester River\, Miles and Wye rivers\, and Eastern Bay at this State of the Rivers presentation\, hosted by Chester Riverkeeper Annie Richards and your new Miles-Wye Riverkeeper. Light refreshments\, including local oysters\, will be served. \nDoors open at 5:30pm for a reception of wine\, beer\, and light appetizers. The formal presentations will begin at 6pm. This event is free—no registration needed!

SUMMARY:Annapolis Science Cafe @ 49 West: “Trials and Tribulations in Battling Invasive Fishes”\, by Joseph Love\, Ph.D.\, Program Manager\, Freshwater Fisheries Program\, MD Dep't of Natural Resources
DESCRIPTION:Invasive fishes of Chesapeake Bay watershed have presented resource managers and the general public challenges for nearly two decades\, with some met with success. When introduced to the Chesapeake Bay watershed\, invasive catfishes (blue catfish and flathead catfish) were considered primarily beneficial targets for recreational anglers. That attitude has changed\, though\, as each species has expanded their range in the watershed\, with blue catfish becoming far more abundant and widespread than flathead catfish\, but both posing significant threats. These species were joined by a new invasive fish in the early 2000’s when northern snakeheads were discovered in tidal freshwater of Potomac River. Please join us to hear Dr. Love describe how the state is dealing with these invasives. We hope you will come in person\, but zoom info is available too; if interested in zoom or other questions\, email annapoliscafesci@gmail.com . SUMMARY:Restoring the Chesapeake Bay: The Good\, the Bad\, & the Ugly
DESCRIPTION:The League of Women Voters Anne Arundel County present Gerald Winegrad at the Busch Annapolis Library Sunday\, April 23 at 2 pm. Former Maryland Senator Winegrad has devoted himself to environmental causes for 53 years. His presentation will examine the results of 39 years of personal involvement in formal efforts to restore the Chesapeake Bay. \nBay restoration is based on limiting nutrients and sediment that are causing dead zones and living resources to decline. Winegrad will pull no punches in revealing the inconvenient truths on the issues. Learn from this expert insider about the successes and failures toward these goals and how we as individuals can take action to ensure a healthier Bay. This is an event you won’t want to miss. \nMr. Winegrad is a lifelong Marylander\, environmental attorney\, former state senator\, member of the Chesapeake Bay Commission\, and a graduate school professor—teaching a course he wrote on Bay restoration. \n

SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture - Encountering Hurricanes in Colonial British America
DESCRIPTION:Hurricanes were a new phenomenon for Europeans when they arrived in the New World\, but they quickly became a defining (and terrifying) feature of the life in colonial British America. This was especially the case for colonists who ventured to the Caribbean and the southeastern mainland coast. This lecture with Matt Mulcahy of Loyola University will explore the English encounter with hurricanes\, their impact on the development of colonial societies\, how colonists made sense of these events\, and what accommodations they made in response to the storms over time. The focus will be on colonies like Jamaica\, Barbados\, and South Carolina\, but will also consider early hurricanes in Maryland and Virginia. \nRegistration required.
