SUMMARY:CELEBRATE THE SOUNDS OF NEW ORLEANS WITH VOCALIST RENÉE GEORGES AND GEORJAZZ
DESCRIPTION:World traveled vocalist Renée Georges and Georjazz will perform on Sunday\, June 19 in the first outdoor concert of the season presented by Jazz Beyond Borders in the garden courtyard of Cafe Mezzanotte in Severna Park\, Maryland. In the monthly music series\, guests enjoy Mediterranean cuisine while listening to international recording and performing artists. \nA Los Angeles native\, Renée Georges toured internationally working with the likes of MC Hammer and Ray Charles. She crossed four continents as one of the last Raelettes to hit the road with Ray Charles in a backing vocal career that spanned from 1994 until Charles’ final show in 2003. She is now a Maryland resident with a multi-faceted career and fronts her own group. (See https://www.rgeorjazzmusic.com for more information.) \nSays Georges\, “Every year is a new opportunity to honor the unique contributions of New Orleans jazz\, with its historic sound\, rooted in the cultural blend of African\, French and Creole people.” With this show she will be honoring her Louisianan ancestors – and there are more reasons to celebrate! The concert takes place on Father’s Day and also celebrates Juneteenth\, the holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. \nRenée Georges and Georjazz features some of the best-known musicians currently performing in the nation’s capital. Among them are bassist Herman Burney\, percussionist Nasar Abadey and the singer’s husband\, trombonist DuPort Georges. Their lively program includes selections of standards and popular songs conveying the distinctive sound of New Orleans. \nMusic lovers around the globe are familiar with the elements associated with the sound – Dixieland\, blues\, spirituals and brass bands. The Jazz Beyond Borders audience can look forward to tunes such as “When the Saints Go Marching In\,” “Just a Closer Walk with Thee\,” “Wade in the Water\,” “Right Place\, Wrong Time” and “Do you know what it Means to Miss New Orleans.” A unique arrangement of “What a Wonderful World” will feature vocalist Renée and her husband\, trombone player DuPort Georges\, in an acoustic duet. \nSeating for the outdoor show on June 19 is at 5:00 p.m. Music begins at 5:30 p.m. In the event of rain\, the concert will move indoors\, where tables are socially distanced and windows afford fresh air. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased online from instant seats (select Cafe Mezzanotte as the venue): https://instnt.us/CafeMezz Please note: the box office closes two hours before the show and most shows sell out in advance. For information call 410-647-1100. \nNow in its sixth year\, Jazz Beyond Borders matches cultural diversity with artistic excellence\, bringing world class artists to festivals\, concerts\, classrooms and airwaves. The jazz and world music series with Cafe Mezzanotte was begun in November 2019. Shows are offered spring through fall in a beautiful courtyard adjacent to the restaurant\, moving indoors as the weather cools.

SUMMARY:The JoGo Project Returns to Severna Park (One Night Only) - 5:30 PM seating\, 6:00 PM show
DESCRIPTION:Jazz Beyond Borders welcomes saxophonist Elijah Jamal Balbed and The JoGo Project back to Anne Arundel County. One of the most popular and innovative bands to come from the nation’s capital in years\, the group merges musical styles of jazz and Go-Go with exciting results. They proved a hit last September as headliners for the Art in the Park festival in Severna Park. \nThe band will appear for one show only on Sunday\, May 15 at 6:00 p.m. as part of the ”Jazz at the Mezz” monthly dinner concert series held at Cafe Mezzanotte at 760 Ritchie Highway in Severna Park\, Maryland. On top of the uplifting and energizing music\, the audience can enjoy a recently updated Mediterranean menu and free\, no hassle parking on site. \nThe JoGo Project is led by international saxophonist/pianist Elijah Jamal Balbed\, A former Chuck Brown protégé\, he is one of the District’s premiere jazz artists\, having won the 2020 DC Jazz Prix Competition and earned the titles of Best Tenor Saxophonist and Best New Jazz Musician from Washington City Paper. Balbed has been featured by Capital Bop and in Smithsonian Magazine and The Washington Post. He has performed at The Kennedy Center\, Strathmore\, Bethesda Blues & Jazz and Bohemian Caverns with numerous ensembles performing various styles of jazz. \nBalbed’s international tours include appearances in Japan\, the U.K.\, Qatar and the Caribbean Islands and Russia (on behalf of the U.S. State Department and U.S. Consulate). He performed with Chuck Brown\, the “Godfather of Go-Go\,” from 2011 until Brown’s passing in 2012. Two years later\, he founded this fusion band\, preserving the legacy of D.C.’s unique art form. \nMezzanotte show highlights include the old jazz standard “Poinciana” by Nat Simon and made famous by Ahmad Jamal. The JoGo Project flips the song’s classic beat and puts a “Go-Go Swing” groove under it\, in the style of Chuck Brown and Grover Washington. (The tune is featured on JoGo’s 2018 EP entitled “One for Pops.”) A JoGo fan favorite\, Bob Marley’s classic “Wait in Vain\,” begins with a Go-Go groove before harkening back to its roots with a captivating reggae groove. \n“Jazz at the Mezz” was begun by Paulina Phillips and Theresa Sise of Jazz Beyond Borders. The organization brings international performing/recording artists to festivals\, concert halls and classrooms and launches album releases. Diverse musical offerings have featured indigenous artists and others from the U.S. and performers from such countries as Spain\, Canada\, United Kingdom\, Russia and Brazil. \nAdmission for this special offering is $30. Seating is at 5:30 PM for the 6:00 p.m. concert.
