SUMMARY:Lincoln’s Generals’ Wives: Four Women Who Influenced the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:Historic Sotterley is pleased to announce the finale event of the 2020 Sotterley Speaker Series. On Wednesday\, November 4th\, Candice Shy Hooper\, will present Lincoln’s Generals’ Wives: Four Women Who Influenced the Civil War. This is a free virtual event. \nWinner of the 2017 Sarton Award for biography\, Candice Hooper is a historian\, writer\, and member of advisory boards for President Lincoln’s Cottage in D.C. and the Ulysses S. and Julia D. Grant Historical Home in Detroit. Lincoln’s General’s Wives\, her first book\, a detailed and lively account of the overlooked role four women played in the Civil War. Using letters\, memoirs\, and her subjects’ extensive wartime travel reports\, Hooper’s group biography of Jessie Frémont\, Nelly McClellan\, Ellen Sherman\, and Julia Grant—each married to a Union Army General—shows how much these women influenced their spouses and\, through them\, the President and the nation.\nThe extraordinary and influential wives of Abraham Lincoln’s top generals were not only their husbands’ closest confidantes but also had a profound impact on the generals’ ambitions and actions. Most important\, the women’s own attitudes toward\, and relationships with\, Lincoln had major historical significance. \nFor the 13th season\, this series is made possible by the generous sponsorship of The Boeing Company!\nThis event is Free\, but advance reservation is required for on-line participation.\nInstructions for registration can be found on Historic Sotterley’s website: www.sotterley.org.\nSotterley Speaker Series 2020 Series Finale
