SUMMARY:FREE Children's Event: Exploring Botanical Art in the Museum with Titian Peale
DESCRIPTION:Exploring Botanical Art in the Museum with Titian Peale\nJune 30 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am \nSummer Storytime \nDoes the child in your life love nature? Then this could be the perfect program for your little explorer. \nArtist Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) interests expanded far beyond the canvas and out into the natural world. Peale\, who grew up in Annapolis\, inspired a love of science in his youngest son\, Titian (1799-1885)\, when he created one of America’s first natural history museums in Philadelphia. Titian pursued his father’s passion by becoming a noted naturalist and botanical artist. \nIn this hands-on program participants will visit one room in the mansion and pick out the plants and animals in I Spy fashion. Then they will go out to the garden to find examples of seeds and flowers. Finally\, they will pick sage leaves from the herb garden and create a botanical sponge-painted leaf and a drawing of a butterfly to take home. Children will then have story time in the garden listening to Help for Mr. Peale by Barbara Morrow. The story is about artist Charles Willson Peale establishing one of the first natural history museums in Philadelphia in the 1790’s. \nOffered for a maximum number of 10 children.\nFREE thanks to the Winifred Gordon Art & Wellness Series: Kids Edition.\nDonations are appreciated.

SUMMARY:Concert in the Garden: Intrepid Femininity
DESCRIPTION:Concert in the Garden: Intrepid Femininity\nSongs for summer by Barbara Strozzi & Francesca Caccini \nDoors open at 6:15 p.m Cash bar for wine/beer. Members of Hammond-Harwood House Museum receive a free drink.\nConcert 7:00 p.m to 8:15 p.m \nSoprano Elissa Edwards and lutenist Richard Kolb present delightful songs on the lighter side by Strozzi and Caccini\, framed with lute and theorbo solos by their contemporaries Michelangelo Galilei and Alessandro Piccinini. \nIt’s well known that women in 17th-century Europe were severely hindered in the any endeavor that overstepped the constraints of traditional feminine modesty and subservience. What is less well known is that a substantial number of intrepid women established themselves at the highest levels of almost every field\, including the arts\, politics\, and business. Thanks to various combinations of exceptional talent\, hard work\, and special circumstances they managed to sidestep social constraints\, and were widely acclaimed for doing so. Both Francesca Caccini and Barbara Strozzi were acknowledged among the leading musicians of their respective generations. Both benefitted from favorable circumstances\, Caccini at the Tuscan court under the rule of Christine de Lorraine\, and Strozzi in the traditionally liberal environment of the Venetian cultural elite. \nPrice: $50 \nFor more info: https://hammondharwoodhouse.org/event/concert-in-the-garden-intrepid-femininity/\nFor tickets: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/concert-in-the-hammond-harwood-house-garden-intrepid-femininity-tickets-153860221063?utm_source=eventbrite&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=post_publish&utm_content=shortLinkNewEmail
