SUMMARY:FREE CHILDREN'S EVENT: Digging up the Past at Hammond-Harwood House
DESCRIPTION:FREE CHILDREN’S EVENT: Digging up the Past at Hammond-Harwood House \nAugust 25 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am \nDigging up the Past at Hammond-Harwood House\nSummer Storytime \nCalling all pre-historic creature lovers! Did you know that Hammond-Harwood House has a connection to one of the earliest pre-historic excavations in America? \nCharles Willson Peale (1741-1827) was a famous painter who grew up in Annapolis\, and many of his painting are in the Hammond-Harwood House. Peale was more than just a painter\, he was also an early scientist who excavated mastodon bones from the Hudson Valley in New York. Peale later displayed the mastodon model in his own natural history museum in Philadelphia. \nThe program will start out inside the mansion by looking at a painting of a parrot done by Peale\, and talk about his natural history museum. After children will go into the garden and listen to the book about Peale’s excavation to unearth the bones of the mastodon. Lastly\, children will make a dinosaur model made from black paper and Q-tips to take home. \nOffered for a maximum number of 10 children.\nFREE thanks to the Winifred Gordon Art & Wellness Series: Kids Edition. \nDonations are appreciated. \nRegister at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/childrens-summer-storytime-digging-up-the-past-at-hammond-harwood-house-tickets-159027765327

SUMMARY:Courted and Highly Prized: Dutch Traders in the 17th Century Chesapeake
DESCRIPTION:This presentation examines the role that Dutch trader played in the economic and cultural development of the Chesapeake during the seventeenth century. Relying on court records\, mercantile accounts\, correspondence\, and material culture evidence Professor of History and author\, Dr. Koot reconstructs the mercantile and kinship networks that tied Dutch traders in New Netherland (New York) to English planters as well as the rich artifactual residue of this trade. When England’s Restoration government ordered a clamp down on Anglo-Dutch smuggling in the Chesapeake in the 1660s Dutch and English traders in Maryland were at the forefront of blazing a new smuggling route in the Upper Chesapeake that avoided increased English patrols. Not coincidently\, this route connected the Dutch city of New Amstel on the Delaware River to the western coast of the Chesapeake Bay in northern Maryland. These individuals\, including the governors of Maryland and Virginia (Charles Calvert and William Berkeley)\, worked throughout the 1660s to maintain the Chesapeake’s connections to Dutch New Netherland. Every day Virginians and Marylanders ate from Dutch stoneware\, smoked tobacco from Dutch pipes\, and stored their possessions in Dutch kasen. In short\, New Netherland traders and residents of the English Chesapeake belonged to the same community in the seventeenth century.
