SUMMARY:Empty Bottle String Band
DESCRIPTION:Southern Maryland Traditional Music and Dance proudly presents the Empty Bottle String Band\, in concert on Friday\, March 24th at Christ Church Parish Hall\, 37497 Zack Fowler Rd\, Chaptico\, MD 20621. Doors open at 7:00 pm\, and music starts at 7:30 pm. The Empty Bottle String Band is one of the finest string bands on the East coast. Hailing from Eastern Tennessee\, the band specializes in playing toe-tapping\, highly danceable traditional Appalachian music. They are known for their upbeat tunes and feel-good music. Their impressive stage presence is coupled with a delightfully self-effacing strength and confidence in their music. Their sound is inventive\, while still staying close to the old time string band tradition of the 1930’s. They have become a festival favorite wherever they go and are one of the Appalachian region’s most popular old-time groups. \nThe Empty Bottle String Band trio (Kristal Harman – guitar and vocals\, Tyler Hughes – banjo/banjo uke and vocals\, and Stephanie Jeter – autoharp/bass and vocals) will be accompanied by fiddler Phil Jones. Check out their website\, social media accounts\, and bios all linked on the SMTMD Concerts Page. \nDon’t forget to buy your tickets: $15 for SMTMD members and $20 for non-members. SUMMARY:Annapolis Science Cafe @ 49 West: “Serendipity in Science: Investigating Malaria Transmission from the Perspective of a Green Alga”\, by William Snell\, Ph.D.\, Cell Biologist\, University of MD\, College Park
DESCRIPTION:Annapolis Science Cafe @ 49 West: “Serendipity in Science: Investigating Malaria Transmission from the Perspective of a Green Alga”\, by William Snell\, Ph.D.\, Cell Biologist\, University of Maryland College Park. Malaria kills ~600\,000 people (mostly children) each year. Although research focused directly on malaria is central to global efforts to eradicate the disease\, the National Institutes of Health also recognizes the importance of basic\, non-targeted research and serendipity in solving major biomedical challenges. Please join us to hear Dr. Snell describe how his long-term\, NIH-funded studies on a simple green alga have led to the discovery of an ancient family of proteins essential for sexual reproduction in unicellular and multicellular plants and animals\, and uncovered a new target for a transmission-blocking malaria vaccine. We hope you will come in person\, but zoom info is available too; if interested in zoom or other questions\, email annapoliscafesci@gmail.com . You may reserve seatse for the event (free) at 49 West by calling 410-626-9796.
