SUMMARY:Sotterley Presents: People and Perspectives with Imani Black
DESCRIPTION:Our next installment of Sotterley Presents: People and Perspectives will take place virtually on May 24th. The seafood industry has rapidly grown over the last few decades\, while natural seafood resources have slowly decreased. Imani Black\, founder of Minorities in Aquaculture\, will explore the opportunities presented by aquaculture\, farming seafood like oysters in a sustainable way. \nImani Black was born and raised on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in Chestertown. She has always had a passion for restoration and conservation since she was a young girl and found great interest in the rapidly growing shellfish aquaculture industry\, after completing an aquaculture training program at Virginia Institute of Marine Science in 2016. Since then\, Imani has worked on oyster farms\, nurseries and hatcheries along the Eastern Shore of Virginia and Maryland. From 2018 to 2020\, she was the Assistant Hatchery Manager for Hoopers Island Oyster Company\, having the opportunity to work in all aspects of shellfish growout. \nThrough her love for her career\, Imani founded Minorities In Aquaculture\, a nonprofit organization that strives to empower and support women of color in the aquaculture industry by educating women of traditional watermen legacy and heritage in coastal communities while providing opportunities such as paid internship\, technical skills training and career development resources in the new wave of commercial fisheries. In addition to developing the nonprofit\, Imani is also pursuing a Master’s degree at the University of Maryland’s Center for Environmental Science researching the historical minority engagement in commercial fisheries in the Chesapeake Bay.

SUMMARY:Annapolis Science Cafe @ 49 West: “The Magothy River Index and the Yellow Perch Dilemma"\, by Paul Spadaro & Sally Hornor\, Magothy River Ass'n
DESCRIPTION:The Magothy River Index is calculated each year\, providing a perspective of the well-being of the River based on three criteria: the amount of submerged aquatic vegetation\, the amount of dissolved oxygen in the deepest water and water clarity. We will discuss this annual review for the recent past and present data for 2022\, which shows an improvement in water quality. The Magothy River Association is an all-volunteer group of residents who have worked on aquatic grass restoration as well as oyster reef restoration and we will look at these efforts. For the past ten years we have been involved with the study of the yellow perch population in the river\, documenting annual spawning events which produce egg sacs as well as seining for larval fish downstream from the spawning grounds. The MRA contends that this population is sustainable in the Magothy while the MD Dept of Natural Resources does not concur. Please join us for Sally Hornor’s and Paul Spadaro’s presentation on the state of the Magothy River and the yellow perch dilemma in the Magothy River. We hope you will come in person\, but zoom info is available too; if interested in zoom or other questions\, email annapoliscafesci@gmail.com . You may reserve seats for this event at 49 West by calling 410-626-9796.

SUMMARY:Mud to Music: Clay Flute Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Musical instruments have helped us communicate and express ourselves since the beginning of human culture. Learning about the musical instruments of the ancient Americas and building and playing our own instruments helps us to awaken the memory of our connection to nature\, cultivate presence through working with clay\, and experience joy through sound and music-making. \nIn this hands-on workshop we will learn about musical instruments that have been made across Central and South America for thousands of years and learn to build our own working clay flutes. The workshop will return Dec 8th from 6-8 PM for a musical jam session where we’ll reflect on our learnings\, explore the sound palettes of our instruments\, and learn to express ourselves using our clay flutes. \nAll are welcome\, and no previous experience with clay\, instruments or music is necessary. This program is made possible by a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council.

SUMMARY:ArtWorks@7th Presents: Wings and Things
DESCRIPTION:For the month of June\, Artworks@7th will host a three-artist collaborative show\, Wings and Things\, representing the freedom to move\, and soar. \nDavy Strong\, an acrylic and oil artist\, loves to capture the local flora and fauna of southern Maryland. Her art explores the bayside\, the fields\, and the living creatures within those environments. “I’ve been working with images of the wildlife I find while walking on the beach or in my garden.” \nNico Gozal has a unique process. All of his works begin with a piece of silk and colored inks. Originally from Indonesia\, he has blended his culture’s crafts with his approach to the world around him. His winged creatures include penguins\, fish\, bees\, and geese in formation. \nThe third artist is Mary Gault\, both a 2-D and 3-D artist. For the show\, expect to see detailed wood sculptures and paintings of many local birds of all sizes\, such as blue herons\, flamingos\, egrets\, and other favorites. Her attention to detail is captivating. \nOur guest artist this month is Pamela Callen\, a past member of the gallery. Beautiful\, poignant\, or striking images she has seen around the world are the reason for her painting. It is her method of communicating on some basic\, universal level with viewers. She says the gift of gab is not her strong suit\, so it is the most meaningful way to share her observations of far-flung or local places\, people\, animals or nature.
