SUMMARY:Winter Lecture- Commodore Matthew C. Perry: Sailor\, Diplomat\, Navel Educator
DESCRIPTION:Join us virtually for our annual winter lecture series hosted over Zoom. You will be challenged to question and to learn by engaging speakers on eight diverse topics including a discussion about Commodore Matthew Perry’s early accomplishments in 1820-30s at sea fighting piracy\, claiming Key West for the U.S.A.\, repatriating free slaves to Africa\, and repressing illegal slave trade. His leadership with naval steam power and commanding first steam-powered ships\, including during the Mexican War and the expedition to Japan\, where his successful Treaty of Peace and Amity ended over 200 years of isolation by Japan. \nPresenter: Dr. Matthew C. Perry | Scientist Emeritus \nDr. Matthew C. Perry is originally from Rhode Island\, where as a child he obtained an early interest in his ancestor\, Commodore Matthew C. Perry\, who negotiated a treaty of peace and amity between Japan and the United States in 1854. After graduating from college in 1963\, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard a ship in the western Pacific Ocean and was involved with the first two amphibious landings in Vietnam. SUMMARY:African American Heritage Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Trace the journey of African Americans\, and explore their impact both nationally and internationally. This 2-hour walking tour\, offered in partnership with the Kunte Kinte-Alex Haley Foundation and named a “Heritage Award Winner” by the Four Rivers Heritage Area\, starts at Market House Park across from Annapolis City Dock\, where slave ships entered 300 years ago. The Alex Haley statue that marks the significance of the author of Roots and the journey of his ancestor Kunte Kinte is featured. Symbolically\, the stroll continues uphill through local history to the State House and the statue of Thurgood Marshall\, the first African American Supreme Court Justice. Hear of famous Marylanders\, such as Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass. Your period-attired guide will highlight the importance of the Underground Railroad in the Chesapeake Bay region. During colonial times\, the labor of both the enslaved and free blacks was the cornerstone upon which the tobacco economy was built. In the 19th-century\, Maryland was home to more free African Americans than any other state. Presently\, Maryland continues to grow because of the important contributions made by her African American residents. The Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Foundation receives 20% of the proceeds.

SUMMARY:The Power of Pebbles & Angels
DESCRIPTION:Imagine this: You are standing at the edge of a still pond. Bending down\, you pick up a small pebble and toss it in the water. A small splash and then ripples begin their journey across the water towards the shoreline. What shores will these ripple touch? You many never know. \nYou are a “Pebble Thrower in the still Pond of Life.” You have the power to “create ripples” in your world—one tiny step at a time—in the lives of others and around the world. But we can’t do this alone. \nIn this 60-minute presentation\, Patti will explain how she taps into the power that we’re all born with\, transformed some of life’s most painful lessons into fuel for good\, what tools & tips she used to sharpen her skills and use her talents\, how she discovered the Sacred Space of Brave\, the baby steps she took to unearth her Life Purpose and move towards The Light\, and more. Everyone is welcome! Come with curiosity\, questions\, and a willingness to learn and share.\n—————————-\nPresentation by Patti DiMiceli of Embrace the Angel. Patti is a life coach\, end-of-life doula\, and a certified grief educator & coach.

SUMMARY:Bluegrass Comeback to Southern Maryland Concert Series-2022
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday February 20\, Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass will be playing traditional bluegrass the way it should be played. With a hard driving\, lonesome sound. Danny is a favorite all over and he has fans here in Southern Maryland. Bluegrass singer\, Alison Krauss considers Danny as one of her ‘favorite singers. His voice combines powerful range and soulful blues with a sound like no one else in bluegrass today.’ When Danny was still in high school\, he stood alongside his dad\, Bob Paisley with the first generation of the Southern Grass. After his dad’s passing\, he took the leading role of continuing the traditional sound of the Southern Grass. He is certainly a “Bluegrass Troubadour.”\nDoors will open at Noon with the show starting at 2:00 pm. Tickets for the shows will be $20.00 per person sold at the door only with children under twelve free with a paid adult. Food and beverages will also be available for sale at Noon for a separate price.

SUMMARY:14th Annual Bridges to the World film Festival
DESCRIPTION:14th Annual “Bridges to the World International Film Festival”\, featuring five foreign films over five weeks will be presented virtually on Zoom Webinar. The Festival\, sponsored by World Artists Experiences\, features five films from five countries. It will run for five weeks on Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time\, beginning February 1 and ending March 1.\nA film from a different country will be shown each week. The films were selected and provided by the embassies to represent their country’s spirit and art of film making. Each film will be introduced and followed by a discussion. Films will be shown with English subtitles.\nOn February 1\,”Petit Paysan” from France will be screened\, followed on February 8 with “Khmer Rice Noodles” from Cambodia. On February 15\, “The Blind Orchestra” from Morocco will be featured. On February 22 will be “Guatemala: On the Edge of Discovery”. The Festival will end on March 1 with “Guerrilla” from Bangladesh.\nThe first Film\, “Petit Paysan” from France\, is a naturalistic and yet suspenseful drama about the challenges faced by a young dairy farmer. The premise seems rather unusual\, but the performances of a strong cast generates a low-key thriller and a socio-economic commentary. \nTo join the Film Festival\, use the ZOOM LINK: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_VIcOuAUUSx-NHvmr-ufMhA \nIf prompted\, Webinar ID; 851 5628 9213\nPassword: Bridges \nAll five viewings will use the same number and passcode. A direct link to the Zoom Webinars will be on the WAE website at www.WorldArtists.org.\nA Festival guide is available for download from the WAE website. The guide provides information about each film.
