SUMMARY:CP Open Auditions for Tartuffe by Molière
DESCRIPTION:🎭AUDITIONS FOR TARTUFFE🎭\nAll roles are open and non-paying. Descriptions are of character appearance and temperament\, not age of actors. The show requires 7 men (possible doubling) and 5 women.\nAlthough Moliere wrote Tartuffe as a satire on religious hypocrisy in 17th century France\, and this production will be set in its proper time\, playmakers and audiences should have no trouble relating it to social tropes and characters of today. Diverse casting is welcome as a way to further enhance the current relevance of this classic. \nSynopsis:\nWealthy bourgeois M. Orgon has taken into his household Tartuffe\, an apparent religious zealot who has come on hard times. Actually an opportunist and swindler\, Tartuffe has gained substantial status in the eyes of Orgon and his mother\, Mme Pernell. Orgon has become so enamored\, he is tricked into handing over his property\, and is willing to give Tartuffe his daughter’s hand in marriage\, breaking her current engagement. Orgon’s son\, Damis\, his brother-in-law\, Cléante\, and his daughter’s maid\, Dorine\, all try unsuccessfully to get him to see the truth. Ultimately it is his wife\, Elmire\, who comes up with the plan to bring Orgon to his senses and restore order. \nPlease see website for character breakdown and full details: https://thecolonialplayers.org/index.php/get-involved/auditions

SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture - The Despot's Heel
DESCRIPTION:“The Despot’s Heel” tells the story of the secession crisis in Maryland in the early days of the American Civil War. Both the state\, as well as the city of Baltimore\, experienced tensions caused by the divided loyalties of its citizens. These differences erupted into a riot in the streets when a pro-secession mob attacked U.S. troops passing through Baltimore on their way to Washington\, and the subsequent military occupation of the city by federal forces. News of the riot inspired James Ryder Randall\, a Marylander living in New Orleans\, to compose the song “Maryland\, My Maryland\,” as an appeal for his native state to join the Confederacy – the opening line “The despot’s heel is on thy shore” refers to the U.S. military presence in the state. Maryland\, however\, remained loyal to the Union throughout the war. This presentation will examine the political\, economic and military significance of the state in the spring of 1861 and afterward\, as well as the course it took in the conflict. \nRegistration required. Registration closes one half hour prior to lecture. This lecture will be recorded! \nCost: $15 per household for General Admission; $10 per household for HA Members\, Military\, and HA Docents

SUMMARY:Robert Freedman: Israel and Russia - A Troubled 75-year Relationship
DESCRIPTION:Robert Freedman\, Ph.D.\, Adjunct Professor at Johns Hopkins University will deliver an address titled “Israel and Russia – A Troubled 75-year Relationship” before the Baltimore Council on Foreign Affairs on Thursday\, June 22\, 2023. The program will be held on the 21st floor of the World Trade Center Baltimore\, 401 E. Pratt Street\, Baltimore\, Maryland\, 21202 at 6:00 p.m.\nIsrael celebrates its 75th anniversary this month in a state of outward strength and internal turmoil. Militarily\, it’s the strongest state in the region. Diplomatically\, it’s made major gains in its long-sought relations with Arab states. Its internal politics\, however\, have turned bitter and divisive in a public dispute over the nature of Israeli democracy.\nOn the occasion of the anniversary\, our next speaker\, Professor Robert O. Freedman\, will take a critical look at a key element of Israel’s foreign relations – its ties with Russia.\nRussia has provided military and diplomatic support to Israel’s enemies over the past 75 years\, and it’s given direct and indirect aid to terror groups that attacked Israel. Russia is now locked in an ever-closer relationship with Iran\, which seeks Israel’s destruction. Yet after Russia invaded Ukraine last year and turned to Iran to supply lethal attack drones\, Israel has sent extensive humanitarian aid to Ukraine\, but not the military aid which President Zelenskyy requested. Indeed\, since the rise of Vladimir Putin\, Dr. Freedman asserts in a new paper\, Israel has been the junior partner in the relationship\, giving Russia much more than it has received in return.\nHis thesis is carefully grounded and is well worth hearing and debating.\nProfessor Freedman is one of the leading U.S. authorities on Israel\, the Middle East\, and American foreign policy.\nHe received his B.A. in Diplomatic History from the University of Pennsylvania and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in International Relations from Columbia University. He has been an Assistant Professor of Russian History at the United States Military Academy\, Associate Professor of Political Science and Russian at Marquette University and Professor of Political Science at the Baltimore Hebrew University\, including a tenure as President of the institution. Currently\, he is a Visiting Professor at Johns Hopkins University. He is the author or co-author of twenty books. He has been a commentator on National Public Radio\, the BBC\, and the Voice of America as well as other major American news outlets. He has advised policymakers in the State Department\, the Central Intelligence Agency\, the Israeli Defense Ministry and the Israeli Foreign Ministry. He has also been called upon to serve the United States government on delegations to Moscow\, Beijing\, Uzbekistan\, and Tunis. Professor Freedman is well-known to members of the Council\, having addressed it on a number of occasions since 1981. \nReservations are required. Members may attend free of charge and membership is open to the public. Membership\, event information\, and reservations may be obtained by email (programs@bcfausa.org).

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Annapolis: The Tale of Sea Shanties
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Annapolis presents: “The Tale of Sea Shanties\,” with Jessica M. Floyd\, scholar of sea shanties during the Great Age of Sail. \nClimb aboard with Profs and Pints and spend an evening enjoying a rollicking look at the songs that sailors sang while working at sea. You’ll gain a newfound understanding of the rich history of songs sung by working sailors and of the lives those sailors led. \nYour captain on this scholarly voyage will be Jessica Floyd\, an associate professor of English at the Community College of Baltimore County who has extensively researched and analyzed sea shanties\, especially those sung during the period from 1500 to 1860. She’ll discuss their history\, what they tell us about relations aboard ships and the culture of the time when they were sung\, and how they’re fascinating cultural objects through which we can encounter sensations of frustration\, longing\, and desire. \nShe’ll describe how authentic shanties were a genre unique to the merchant sailing man during the Great Age of Sail\, and she’ll teach us how to differentiate shanties from drinking songs and pirate tunes. Being work songs of the sea\, shanties were sung in connection with specific tasks. They were complex and\, often\, provocative. \nTo help us get a better understanding of what shanties communicate\, Professor Floyd will analyze the narratives of popular shanty tunes\, looking at what they say about the sailors’ identity. You’ll hear the lyrics of “Barnacle Bill” or the phrase “Yo\, ho\, ho and a bottle of rum” in an entirely new light. \nFinally\, she’ll examine why shanties experienced such a revival during the pandemic. You’ll gain an appreciation of not only their enduring quality but how they attach to specific human experiences. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later. Please allow yourself time to place any orders and get seated and settled in.) \nImage: The crew of the Parma uses a capstan to weigh anchor.
