SUMMARY:Rotary Club of Annapolis Lunch Group Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Rotary Club of Annapolis is celebrating its Centennial 1921-2021 – 100 years of serving the community. The club is made up of 142 dynamic individuals participating in numerous projects to benefit people locally and around the world. The club has three groups that meet at different times for the convenience of members. The Lunch Group meets Thursdays at 12 noon at Annapolis Yacht Club. The Breakfast Group meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 8:00am at Eggcellence on Housley Road\, and the Happy Group meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 6:00pm at Gordon Biersch Brewery in Parole. Guests are always welcome. To learn more or attend a meeting\, contact Paul Skrickus\, paskrickus@gmail.com or 410-353-6087. \nThis week\, Rotarian Linda Martinak will discuss the history and development of Martinak State Park. It began when Linda’s great uncle\, George Martinak returned from WWI in France\, and worked in D.C. as a government printer. Mr. Martinak’s true love was the environment\, especially fishing\, and he began to buy small parcels of land beginning in 1928\, eventually accumulating 100 wooded acres in Denton\, MD on the banks of the Choptank River. He wanted to share the property with his family and also the public so that all could enjoy the beauty and bounty of his “Lupine Lodge\,” later named Martinak State Park. The presentation will focus on the history of the land and water and the generosity of Mr. Martinak through his gift to the State of Maryland.

SUMMARY:Untold Stories of the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:The full story of the American Revolution requires us to look beyond the famous lives of Washington\, Hamilton\, Franklin\, Adams\, and Jefferson. Join University of Maryland historian Richard Bell as he focuses on all the things you might not have learned in high school or college about this great struggle for independence. We will probe unexpected corners of this sprawling\, eight-year war and expands its cast of characters substantially to include the typhoid-ridden immigrant corset-maker who wrote the pamphlet that gave colonists the confidence to believe they could beat Britain; the Massachusetts woman who disguised herself as a man so that she could serve in Washington’s Army; the enslaved stable hand at Mount Vernon who ran off to join the war and who ended up on the other side of the world; and the widow who became the most important Native American leader during the war. Studying their lives and exploits will reveal the breadth and depth of the sacrifices that the colonists made as they worked to turn a small-scale protest over the price of goods like tea into a fight for freedom.
