SUMMARY:Keith Mines-Haiti: On the Verge of Starvation after a Political Implosion
DESCRIPTION:Keith Mines\, Director of Latin America Program at the United States Institute of Peace\, will deliver an address entitled “Haiti: On the Verge of Starvation after a Political Implosion“ before the Baltimore Council on Foreign Affairs on Wednesday\, July 19\, 2023. The program will be held by live feed at 6:00 p.m.\nHaiti is the second oldest republic in the Western Hemisphere and the first declared black republic on Earth. Today it is the poorest country in the hemisphere and one of the most troubled places on the planet. Its political system has imploded\, and half its 11 million population are on the verge of starvation.\nThe U.S. role in Haiti has been helpful at times but often fraught. Woodrow Wilson sent in the Marines to strip the national bank of its funds in 1914\, and a year later U.S. forces occupied the country\, staying until 1934. An intervention in 1994 lasted six months and involved 25\,000 troops.\nIn this century\, one of Haiti’s biggest problems has been inadequate policing. Yet in 2017\, the country seemed headed on the road to stability\, aided by a U.N. peacekeeping force that supported local police. That’s when the U.S. cut funds for peacekeeping\, which led to a drawdown of the 4000 “Blue Helmets.” Security deteriorated\, politics turned chaotic and violent gangs filled the vacuum and overran the capital.\nToday U.S. apparently doesn’t want to get involved in Haiti\, other than to prevent Haitians from seeking asylum here.\nHow did we get into this mess? Is there a way out?\nOur next speaker\, Keith Mines\, is a genuine expert on Haiti\, having served there as a U.S. Foreign Service officer — just one of the troubled spots he has been in during 32 years in the diplomatic and military services. He has worked on governance and institution-building in Central America and Colombia\, stabilization efforts in Haiti\, Iraq and Afghanistan\, financial stability in Brazil\, security sector reform in Hungary and famine relief and tribal reconciliation in Darfur\, Sudan\, and in Somalia.\nToday he’s the director of Latin America programs at the U.S. Institute of Peace.\nHis recent book tackles an unfashionable subject forthrightly\, beginning with the title: “Why Nation-Building Matters.” He has ardent fans.\n “Keith Mines has been an omnipresent figure at nearly every nation-building enterprise the United States has attempted in the past 40 years\,” writes James Dobbins\, himself one of the most renowned U.S. experts on state-building. “Mines has established a record of unparalleled service in the world’s most difficult places\, recounted here with great insight and compassion.”\n(University of Nebraska Press\, 2020).\nMr. Mines has a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University and a master’s in foreign service from Georgetown University.\nReservations are required. Members may attend free of charge and membership is open to the public. Membership\, event information\, and reservations may be obtained by email (programs@bcfausa.org).

SUMMARY:Theresa Sise & Sweet Tea Perform Moondance in Eastport
DESCRIPTION:Dickson Mercer of the News Post in Frederick describes her “lush voice that sounds bred for jazz.” \nAnnapolis Jazz & Roots invites music lovers to celebrate the anniversary of the Apollo space mission that took three American astronauts to the moon in 1969! Hear music associated with that epic voyage from the styles of pop\, rock and jazz. Tap your toes or get up and dance to delightful tunes such as “Fly Me to the Moon\,” composed by Bart Howard in 1954. Frank Sinatra’s swinging version became synonymous with NASA’s space program and was played on the Apollo 10’s orbit of the moon and Apollo 11’s lunar landing. Groove to “Everyday People\,” written by Sly & The Family Stone in 1963. (Peggy Lee’s version was played on Apollo 11.) The evening would not be complete without Van Morrison’s timeless “Moondance” and beloved chestnuts like “Paper Moon\,” written in 1939 and “Old Devil Moon\,” written for Lena Horne in 1947. \nThe show features some of the region’s hottest musicians. Pianist Darius Scott\, drummer Nick Costa\, and bassist Mike Graham\, Jr. will accompany jazz vocalist Theresa Sise who has a solid history of sold out shows performing with big bands and her own group\, Sweet Tea. \nThe event is a fundraiser for the Annapolis Jazz & Roots Festival begun in 2022. It is held at multiple locations in Eastport in the first two weekends of November. International and regional artists from many countries and cultures perform in free and ticketed events for adults and families. Refreshments will be sold at the July fundraising concert. There will be seating for listeners adjacent to the dance floor. The event is suitable for adults and teens. Admission is is $25 in advance and $35 at the door. It is free to teens 17 and under.

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Annapolis: Torture in the Middle Ages
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Annapolis presents: “Torture in the Middle Ages\,” with Larissa “Kat” Tracy\, professor of medieval literature at Longwood University and author or editor of ten books on medieval violence. \nWhen Pulp Fiction’s Marsellus Wallace vows to “get medieval” on someone we assume that they’re in for some serious pain. Torture—that most notorious aspect of medieval culture and society—more recently has been portrayed in popular culture in series like Game of Thrones and Vikings\, through lurid scenes depicting torture and gruesome punishment as standard medieval practice. In many modern European cities one can find popular museums displaying such gruesome implements as the rack\, the strappado\, the gridiron\, the wheel\, and the iron maiden. \nThe dominant mythology suggests that the Middle Ages was a period during which sadistic torment was inflicted on citizens with impunity and without provocation. The truth\, however\, is a lot more complicated. \nJoin Professor Larissa “Kat” Tracy\, who has extensively researched torture\, punishment\, and social justice in medieval society\, for a talk challenging preconceived ideas that popular historians\, films\, and media have promoted about the prevalence of torture and judicial brutality in medieval society. \nShe’ll discuss medieval Europe’s actual use of torture—the instruments\, the laws\, the cultural norms\, and the victims—and make clear that the act of punishment was actually a very different legal event. She’ll argue that the portrayals of medieval torture in literature represent satire\, critique and dissent; they have didactic and political functions in opposing the status quo. \nThe books that Professor Tracy has written or edited include Torture and Brutality in Medieval Literature; Castration and Culture in the Middle Ages; Medieval and Early Modern Murder; Flaying in the Premodern World\, and most recently End Game: Exile and Execution in Medieval and Early Modern Society. When she gets medieval on you it means you are going to learn. The experience\, however\, won’t be painful at all. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.) \nImage: Torture instruments on display at Prague Castle. Photo by Clayton Tang / Wikimedia Commons.

SUMMARY:Annapolis Science Cafe: “Chesapeake Bay's Underwater Grasses: Life in the Shallows”\, by J. Brooke Landry\, Natural Resource Biologist\, MD DNR
DESCRIPTION:This Annapolis Cafe Scientifique talk will introduce you to one of the Chesapeake Bay’s most vital shallow water habitats – underwater grasses. Underwater grasses\, also known as bay grasses or submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV)\, are essential to the overall health and functioning of the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem. They provide habitat for fish and invertebrates\, food for waterfowl and other critters\, they help stabilize our shorelines\, promote good water quality\, and fight climate change! We’ll discuss some of the most recent research findings for Chesapeake Bay grasses and ways that you can get involved in the effort to protect\, conserve\, and restore them!\nBrooke Landry is an SAV ecologist at Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources and Chair of the Chesapeake Bay Program’s SAV Workgroup. Her work spans the gamut from SAV research – focused primarily on anthropogenic drivers of SAV dynamics – to restoration\, monitoring\, outreach\, and management. She runs the Chesapeake Bay SAV Watchers program\, the nascent Chesapeake Bay SAV Sentinel Site Monitoring Program\, and along with colleagues\, just recently launched the East Coast SAV Collaborative. Additional interests include social marketing as a means of environmental outreach and the advancement of women’s roles in science and management through positive collaborations and mentoring. We hope you will come in person\, but zoom info is available too; if interested in zoom or other questions\, email annapoliscafesci@gmail.com . You may reserve seats for this event at 49 West by calling 410-626-9796.
