DESCRIPTION:Founded in 1994\, as an exchange program with the Soweto Dance Theatre of Johannesburg\, Step Afrika! is the first professional dance company in the world dedicated to the tradition of stepping. Step Afrika! is one of the top five African American dance companies in the United States\, the largest African American-led arts organization in Washington\, D.C. and that city’s only cultural ambassador. The dancers—all college graduates—many who attended Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and are members of Historically Black Greek Fraternities and Sororities. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, though tickets are required. SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture - Encountering Hurricanes in Colonial British America
DESCRIPTION:Hurricanes were a new phenomenon for Europeans when they arrived in the New World\, but they quickly became a defining (and terrifying) feature of the life in colonial British America. This was especially the case for colonists who ventured to the Caribbean and the southeastern mainland coast. This lecture with Matt Mulcahy of Loyola University will explore the English encounter with hurricanes\, their impact on the development of colonial societies\, how colonists made sense of these events\, and what accommodations they made in response to the storms over time. The focus will be on colonies like Jamaica\, Barbados\, and South Carolina\, but will also consider early hurricanes in Maryland and Virginia. \nRegistration required.

SUMMARY:17th Annual SOUPer Bowl Lunch for the Light House
DESCRIPTION:A bowl of soup in exchange for a donation from the heart. Since 2007\, Heritage Baptist Church has used this idea to raise $45\,000 cumulatively for the Light House Homeless Prevention Shelter in Annapolis. Using the connection between “soup” and the “super” NFL championship game\, the donation-only SOUPer Bowl Lunch for the Light House caught community attention and launched what has become a treasured tradition. \nFollowing 2 years of virtual SOUPer Bowl fundraising due to Covid\, 2023 marks a much-anticipated return to the in-person lunch. Sunday\, February 12\, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.\, Heritage Baptist (1740 Forest Drive\, Annapolis) will host the 17th Annual SOUPer Bowl Lunch for the Light House. Representatives from the Light House BEST Culinary Arts job training program will ladle soups prepared by locally renowned Chef Zachary Pope. Menu soups include Chicken Noodle\, Baked Potato and Chili. SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture - Rise Up: Fight and Flight in Colonial American Slavery
DESCRIPTION:In December 1752\, Thomas Thistlewood\, a white Jamaican planter\, caught one of an enslaved man named Congo Sam\, trying to run away. When Thistlewood challenged him\, Congo Sam pulled a machete and ran at him. “I will kill you. I will kill you\,” he shouted. Thistlewood screamed for help but none of his watching Black workers moved to intervene. This talk\, with University of Maryland historian Dr. Richard Bell\, examines the plantation management strategies that produced such violent resistance. It also reveals that extent of slave uprisings in British North America\, using the 1739 Stono Rebellion in South Carolina as a case study\, and explores the lives of those men and women who escaped slavery by disappearing into the forests and swamps of colonial America. \nRegistration required. \nCan’t watch the lecture live? We invite you to register; all registrants will receive a link to the recording of the lecture to watch at their convenience.
