SUMMARY:The Battle for America: The French and Indian War
DESCRIPTION:The Seven Years War (1756-1763) also known as the French and Indian War\, was North America’s main entrance into the world’s first truly global war. Join University of Maryland historian and author Dr. Richard Bell as he tracks the shifting fortunes of several European forces\, as well as their Native and colonial American allies\, on American soil. We will examine the peace treaty that Britain and France finally signed in 1763 to bring this destructive war to an end and the peculiar legacy of American colonists’ involvement: how their participation reinforced a sense of themselves as essential partners in the British Empire\, but also sowed the seeds of the imperial crisis that would culminate just 20 years later in American independence.

SUMMARY:Captain Avery Museum Reopening and Art Exhibition Reception!
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited! Join friends and neighbors for the Captain Avery Museum’s long awaited reopening and a reception for Shady Side artist\, Norman Gross. As part of this reopening\, three spaces in the historic house have been re-imagined to highlight the theme of ‘Three Centuries of Chesapeake Bay History’ which interprets life and work along the Bay\, recreation\, and environmental stewardship. \nThe original house\, built in 1860\, was home to waterman Captain Salem Avery and his family in the late 19th century. In the early 20th century\, the house was purchased and expanded by the National Masonic Fishing and Country Club and became a summer retreat for local Jewish families\, until the 1980s when it was purchased by the Shady Side Rural Heritage Society and reopened as a museum. Now\, in the 21st century\, the Captain Avery Museum’s mission is to explore the evolving connections between individuals and communities and the Chesapeake Bay.
