DESCRIPTION:Trace the journey of African Americans\, and explore their impact both nationally and internationally. This 2-hour walking tour\, offered in partnership with the Kunte Kinte-Alex Haley Foundation and named a “Heritage Award Winner” by the Four Rivers Heritage Area\, starts at Market House Park across from Annapolis City Dock\, where slave ships entered 300 years ago. The Alex Haley statue that marks the significance of the author of Roots and the journey of his ancestor Kunte Kinte is featured. Symbolically\, the stroll continues uphill through local history to the State House and the statue of Thurgood Marshall\, the first African American Supreme Court Justice. Hear of famous Marylanders\, such as Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass. Your period-attired guide will highlight the importance of the Underground Railroad in the Chesapeake Bay region. During colonial times\, the labor of both the enslaved and free blacks was the cornerstone upon which the tobacco economy was built. In the 19th-century\, Maryland was home to more free African Americans than any other state. Presently\, Maryland continues to grow because of the important contributions made by her African American residents. The Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Foundation receives 20% of the proceeds.

SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture - Slavery and the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Richard Bell for his first lecture of the 2022 HA Virtual Lecture Series. It is the first of several lectures which will look at the impact of the American Revolution on the institution of slavery. \nThe American Revolution was a transformative moment in African American history\, a freedom war second only to the Civil War in significance. Over long eight years of war\, both the Continental Army and the British Army appealed to Black Americans for manpower. This lecture argues that chaos of the war itself brought many enslaved men new opportunities for independence\, not least when the British Army began promising freedom to those who might be willing to desert their rebel masters and join the King’s regiments. \nRegistration required. Can’t watch the lecture live? We invite you to register; all registrants will receive a link to the recording of the lecture to watch at their convenience. The lecture recording will be available for two weeks. SUMMARY:14th Annual Bridges to the World film Festival
DESCRIPTION:14th Annual “Bridges to the World International Film Festival”\, featuring five foreign films over five weeks will be presented virtually on Zoom Webinar. The Festival\, sponsored by World Artists Experiences\, features five films from five countries. It will run for five weeks on Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time\, beginning February 1 and ending March 1.\nA film from a different country will be shown each week. The films were selected and provided by the embassies to represent their country’s spirit and art of film making. Each film will be introduced and followed by a discussion. Films will be shown with English subtitles.\nOn February 1\,”Petit Paysan” from France will be screened\, followed on February 8 with “Khmer Rice Noodles” from Cambodia. On February 15\, “The Blind Orchestra” from Morocco will be featured. On February 22 will be “Guatemala: On the Edge of Discovery”. The Festival will end on March 1 with “Guerrilla” from Bangladesh.\nThe first Film\, “Petit Paysan” from France\, is a naturalistic and yet suspenseful drama about the challenges faced by a young dairy farmer.
