SUMMARY:2021 Virtual Planet Walk
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday May 8\, 2021\, the Friends of Anne Arundel County Trails\, NASA’S Goddard Space Flight Center and the Anne Arundel Community College Astronomy Club have teamed up to offer a free\, virtual program focused on our solar system. Typically held along the Planet Walk on the B&A Trail and at the Arnold campus of Anne Arundel Community College\, the current COVID-19 restrictions preclude such in-person events. As a virtual alternative\, this year’s Planet Walk daytime program features information about the individual planets of the solar system\, while the evening event includes an illustrated program on one aspect of the current missions to Mars\, followed by audience discussion. \nThe daytime event will be held from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM EDT on Saturday\, May 8. Planetary scientists and engineers from NASA’S Goddard Space Flight Center\, other research institutions and local astronomers will use separate Zoom breakout rooms to discuss the Sun\, the eight planets and Pluto. Each will present information and news about their planetary body\, while participants will be able to chat directly with presenters to ask questions and gain insights. The format will allow you to pop in and out of each of the rooms at your own pace. \nAlso\, from 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM\, Dr. Erin Lalime\, a Planetary Protection Engineer at NASA”s Goddard Space Flight Center\, will discuss ” Planetary Protection: Why the Search for Life on Mars Means We Care about the Squishy\, Smelly and Slimy Stuff Here on Earth”. She will outline the thorough protocols adopted by NASA to ensure that our exploration of bodies in space does not result in the unintentional introduction of materials which could harm existing organisms here on Earth. At the conclusion of her presentation\, she will be joined by Dr. Denny Glavin and Dr. Maeva Millan\, both NASA astro biologists and Dr. Veronica Pinnick\, a NASA scientist and engineer\, to offer an Astro Cafe\, where participants will be able to ask questions of each panelist. \nIn order to gain access to these free 2021 Virtual Planet Walk Zoom programs\, it will be necessary to preregister. You may register for both programs at the following address: \n https://planetwalk2021.eventbrite.com \nRegistrants will receive a confirmation email with the Zoom connection information. Additional insights about the program and biographies of the evening presenters may be found on the Eventbrite site. \nWhile Anne Arundel County trails are unable to host group events at this time\, the 4.7 mile long Planet Walk is still in place for individuals to explore. The Sun station\, featuring a twenty-five foot sculpture of the Sun\, is located just south of Aquahart Road in Glen Burnie and marks the beginning of the Planet Walk. Smaller stainless steel monuments mark the relative distances of each planet from the Sun. The Planet Walk ends at Earleigh Heights Road in Severna Park with another large sculpture representing Pluto and the Outer Planets. \nPlease take the time to enjoy the Planet Walk as you traverse the B&A Trail by bicycle or on foot and plan to join us on Saturday\, May 8 for the 2021 Virtual Planet Walk events in a whole new format!

SUMMARY:8th Annual Burritos for Beds Breakfast for Samaritan House
DESCRIPTION:After going virtual in 2020\, the 8th Annual Burritos for Beds breakfast returns this year on Tuesday\, May 11\, as an in-person event to raise funds for addiction recovery. The public is invited to enjoy a delicious complimentary breakfast at Chevy’s Fresh Mex in Annapolis and donate to support Samaritan House’s mission. \n“The Covid-19 pandemic hit the recovery community hard\, and it’s still taking a toll\,” said Mike Dillon\, president of the Samaritan House board of directors. “Anne Arundel County suffered 149 fatal overdoses in 2020\, and 50 since the beginning of this year. It’s not a number. These are people- our family\, friends\, neighbors\, and co-workers. The mission of Sam House is critical in fighting this devastating trend.” * \nMembers of the Samaritan House Board of Directors have pledged to personally contribute $15\,000 during Burritos for Beds as a challenge for supporters to match. With this as a seed\, the goal is to raise $30\,000 to grow the continuum of care for a stronger sober community. Samaritan House is a non-profit and donations are tax deductible. \nOn May 11\, from 7-10 am\, the public is invited to Chevy’s Fresh Mex (2436 Solomons Island Road\, Annapolis). Guests will have the opportunity to make a cash or credit donation of any amount and receive a free breakfast box containing a fruit cup\, sweet pastry\, and breakfast burrito. Seating will be available in the restaurant and outdoors on the patio\, with Covid-safe practices in place. \nAnyone making a donation of $50 or more will also get a free\, limited edition “Burritos for Beds” t-shirt. \nSamaritan House\, a state-certified addiction recovery facility\, was founded in 1971 in Annapolis by a group of men in recovery. Now in its 50th year\, Samaritan House can accommodate 32 men at its Campus of Recovery\, with housing for 9 others in an on-site transitional house. \nIf you cannot attend the event\, but would like to support Samaritan House\, you can do so at samaritanhouseannapolis.org/giving For more information\, see samaritanhouseannapolis.org\n or email news@samaritanhouseannapolis.com

SUMMARY:Liar\, Temptress\, Soldier\, Spy: Four Women Undercover in the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:Historic Sotterley hosts  Speaker Series Virtual Event \n\nOn Wednesday\, May 12th at 7:00 pm Sotterley continues its virtual programming with New York Times best-selling author Abbott Kahler as she speaks about her book Liar\, Temptress\, Soldier\, Spy.  Abbott (AKA Karen Abbott) illuminates one of the most fascinating yet little known aspects of the Civil War: the stories of four courageous women—a socialite\, a farmgirl\, an abolitionist\, and a widow—who were spies. \n\nUsing a wealth of primary source material and interviews with the women’s descendants\, Abbott seamlessly weaves the adventures of Belle Boyd\, Emma Edmonds\, Rose O’Neale Greenhow\, and Elizabeth Van Lew\, through the tumultuous years of the war. With a cast of real-life characters including Walt Whitman\, Nathaniel Hawthorne\, General Stonewall Jackson\,detective Allan Pinkerton\, Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln\, and Emperor Napoleon III\, Liar\, Temptress\, Soldier\, Spy lures you into the lives of daring women – 19th century style. \nKaren Abbott is the New York Times bestselling author of several books including Sin in the Second City\,  American Rose\, and The Murder That Shocked Jazz- Age America\, named an Amazon best book of the month for August 2019. She has written for newyorker.com\, the Wall Street Journal\, the Washington Post\, Smithsonian Magazine\, and other publications\, and has appeared on the History Channel\, CBS Sunday Morning\, AMC’s “Making of the Mob\,” the Travel Channel’s “Monumental Mysteries\,” and the Discovery Channel. \n\nThis webinar is part of Sotterley’s 14th annual Speaker Series.  There will be opportunities for Q & A during the webinar.  This is a FREE virtual webinar\, but advance registration is required   On-line registration is available on Sotterley’s website at www.sotterley.org.  Abbott’s book (including a signed book plate!) may also be purchased on the website.
