Bittersweet Hill Nurseries
owner Hildreth Morton
Herbs have been the passion of Bittersweet Hill for 40 years. We have hundreds of varieties, from the famous four — parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme — to the more obscure, including salvia, Cuban oregano and dark opal basil. With our herbs come expert advice on how to grow and preserve them, plus some interesting history and uses.

Bittersweet Hill Nurseries also offers aquatic plants, pond equipment and supplies. Our expert staff helps you add to your current pond or create a whole new water feature in your yard or deck container. We hold clinics and host guest speakers to lecture on aquatic life and other pond concerns. We also sell bullfrog tadpoles and ornamental fish.

At Bittersweet Hill Nurseries, a sale always means a new friend and a new commitment. We are nestled in the rolling hills of rural Davidsonville, just off Route 50. Stop by and stroll around.

Calvert Homestead ~ The Lyle Simmons House
owner: Barbara Burnett
Visits to Calvert Homestead are seasonal rituals. This season Barbara and the girls have been working hard at making some wonderful changes in the barn. Select from one of the many wreaths, swags and arrangements — or place your custom order.

Freshly harvested pussy willows, new spring potpourris and rosehips, a great assortment of dried flowers and our original tobacco stick relics are just a few of the items that will send any season home with you.

Our greenhouse is opening this month with fresh herbs and perennials. To nourish your garden naturally, we sell mushroom mulch by the bag or truck load. To personalize your garden, see our unusual garden art.

The Historic Lyle Simmons House, our lovingly restored 1920 country home, offers you a country retreat. Country charm combines with modern conveniences for your own retreat or special occasions. For meetings, celebrations, bed & breakfast or respite, you’ve a place to come to in the country.

While visiting please take time to reflect and experience our labyrinth.

Ask about our classes, lectures and other programs offered through out the year. But most important, just enjoy your visit, relax and wander the farm. No rushing done here. We are here to help you in any way possible.

The Custom House
owner: Kären Lipe Kolenberg
Unique work with fabric and furniture is the custom at The Custom House. Any fabric. Any place. From an old chair that needs a new look, to windows that need a new world view, to walls that want warming up, to floors that need finesse … even to entire homes.

“What I want to do,” says Kolenberg, “is expand people’s options. When you bring new eyes to a situation, you open up possibilities that weren’t there before.”

We know from experience that Kolenberg is not your average decorator. The difference is not only the enduring quality of her work, though that’s indisputable. The difference is that while you see your problem, she sees your dreams and has the resources to create solutions.

Irish Dresser
owners: Kyra V. Eberle and JoAnn Clifton
This is the time of year to assess the furniture in your house and its arrangement and use. To obtain a fresh, updated look, consider the flexibility of each piece. Then rearrange, add, thin out … evolve a new arrangement that suits your current and future lifestyle.

The Irish Dresser can provide the pieces to fill out this new arrangement — and last for generations. We personally travel to Ireland about twice a year to select pieces of antique (mainly 1850-1890) pine furniture from Ireland and the Continent.

Then our pieces are restored so that they are usable for another 100 years. Thus we can offer antique furniture with history and usability at a price that almost anyone can afford.

Here’s a tip from the pros: Wood is a breathing material; do not seal it. Use a wax that allows the piece of furniture to breathe and retain its integral flexibility in all types of weather. We use a combination of beeswax and orange oil.

One Day Interior Makeovers
owner: Judy Alto, iada, res
“Artful placement is never an extravagance … It gives you lasting pleasure.”

Judy Alto’s business philosophy amounts to much more than knowing where to put the sofa and getting the placement of your treasures right. Her studio specializes in enhancing your home for life as you live it, not just impressing for company. “We celebrate the clients’ previous choices in home furnishings and educate them on how to live in 100 percent of their homes rather than the predictable 20 percent,” says Judy.

One Day Interior Makeovers’ unique design services benefit those who need a refreshed look without additional purchases, those who have just moved in and are struggling to get settled and also those who are preparing to place their home on the market. Ask Judy about her seasonal room refreshers and other specialized design services.

Awning/Covers By The Bay specializes in retractable awnings and PGT Eze-Breeze sunrooms. Why not convert your existing porch or patio and enjoy this summer in comfort?
