Goosey Correspondence
May 17, 2006
Dear Bay Weekly:
About three weeks ago, a couple of geese started a nest on the top of our building, about 30 feet above the ground. We look through the window, and one of them is always on the nest.
Do you know somebody who can take care of this situation? I don’t know how the chicks get the food or get down off that place. The geese have some ‘friends,’ like this crow that is always looking for the eggs.
Felipe Colocho, Germantown
Dear Mr. Colocho:
Through a quick internet search, here are a few places you might seek help …
The Department of Natural Resources: To report nuisance, injured or sick wildlife, call toll-free in Maryland: 1-877-463-6497.
A couple of wildlife rehabilitators, one even in Germantown: Brian Kristal, 301-528-5666, Germantown, reptiles, birds; 2nd Chance Wildlife Center, 301-926-9453, Gaithersburg, all types of animals; Noah’s Ark, 410-626-7700, Arnold, all types of animals.

Dear Bay Weekly:
Lee Prouty from Second Chance Wildlife Center came this afternoon and looked at the situation with the geese (and of course the crows). She told us we should call her the day they hatch, as the goslings can stay in the nest one day after. After that, the height will be a problem and the crows will be another. This situation has been kind of exciting for everybody here. I think this is the first experience in this matter.

Dear Bay Weekly:
We don’t know what happened, but Sunday when I came to see them, the geese were gone and the eggs were there. So the goslings never came. I think it’s kind of sad, but that is nature.
