College is more likely to impoverish the family than get the kid a job. At least that’s what parents of this year’s high school graduates say.
Families will get a bit of relief if their grad goes to St. Mary’s College in Maryland. A windfall $1.5 million grant from this year’s General Assembly will translate to 8.6 percent tuition reduction for in-state undergraduates attending Maryland’s liberal arts honors college. For each student, tuition will fall by more than $1,000. Combined with a tuition freeze in effect this year and last, the reduced tuition rate yields more than $2,000 in cost savings for Maryland families.
Why St. Mary’s? Perhaps this is the silver lining to the cloud of last year’s enrollment slump, when one-third fewer freshmen enrolled than expected, leading to the resignation of college president Joseph R. Urgo.
