Books Reborn
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle take on new meaning in Repurposed Books as Art, an auction-exhibit by artist Carolyn McHugh to benefit Calvert Library.
McHugh has created 21 new ways of looking at a book: a clock, a wreath, a matchbook, a framed page, a music box, a planter, a candy dish, a tissue box, bookmarks, a birdhouse, a charging station, a jewelry box, a kitchen-utensil holder, a vase with flowers, purses with pins and Hattie the Hedgehog.
“I saw a tissue box made out of old books probably 30 years ago, way before recycling was in,” explained McHugh.
An executive board member of Friends of the Library, McHugh proposed recycling books as domestic art to sell at the library’s gift store.
“It took on another life at the book sale,” says McHugh. “We sold repurposed books there, and now it’s in its third life at the Repurposed Books as Art Display and auction.”
Repurposed Books as Art is recycling for McHugh, too. After 14 years running the Calvert County Chamber of Commerce, she’s reusing her college degree in Fine Arts, focused on textiles.
A week into bidding, $40 was the high bid on the purse; bookmarks were three for $15. Bidding continues until 8pm, Thursday, October 17.
Register at the circulation desk. Then, sign in and bid with your number at the podium next to the exhibit. Winning bidders will be notified October 18.
