Calling All Would-Be Directors
Bay Weekly theater reviewers, take notice.
You’ve got your chance — you and everybody else who’s ever said I could do better after seeing a community theater production.
Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre needs directors for all three of the musicals it will stage in the summer of 2012, its 47th season.
“Community theater is an ever-evolving group of people, so we’re constantly looking for more people to involve,” says Carolyn Kirby, president of the company.
But have you got the credentials for the job?
“We’re looking for talented people who have directed before to put on a vibrant show,” says board member Tom Antonelli.
The season starts with Swing (May 23 to June 16). A choreographer-director would be a good fit for that one, says Kirby, as it’s a history of the dance form.
The third show (August 1 to September 1) is Into the Woods, Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s dark fairytale musical.
Rights have yet to be secured for the second show, also tested on Broadway.
You’ll need more than experience, a musical ear and a critic’s eye to direct a Summer Garden Theatre show.
“We’ll want to know their vision for each particular show,” says Kirby, who adds that one of the rewards is “seeing your vision realized on stage.”
That, a small stipend and a boost to your resume are what you’ll get for a job to which you can expect to dedicate at least 100 hours.
Plus, we hope, good reviews.
