Captain Avery Museum Reopening and Art Exhibition Reception!
July 18, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm
FreeYou’re invited! Join friends and neighbors for the Captain Avery Museum’s long awaited reopening and a reception for Shady Side artist, Norman Gross. As part of this reopening, three spaces in the historic house have been re-imagined to highlight the theme of ‘Three Centuries of Chesapeake Bay History’ which interprets life and work along the Bay, recreation, and environmental stewardship.
The original house, built in 1860, was home to waterman Captain Salem Avery and his family in the late 19th century. In the early 20th century, the house was purchased and expanded by the National Masonic Fishing and Country Club and became a summer retreat for local Jewish families, until the 1980s when it was purchased by the Shady Side Rural Heritage Society and reopened as a museum. Now, in the 21st century, the Captain Avery Museum’s mission is to explore the evolving connections between individuals and communities and the Chesapeake Bay.
