“Deadly Gamble: The Wreck of Schooner Levin J Marvel” by Kathy Bergren Smith, Maritime Reporter and Photojournalist
Bergren Smith investigates the tragic story of the schooner, Levin J. Marvel, which capsized in the Chesapeake Bay, battered by Hurricane Connie in 1955. What followed after is just as compelling. Smith constructs her story from the eye-witness accounts of survivors and rescuers, a miraculously recovered diary, newspaper coverage and trial records. This tragedy led directly to changes in marine law and Cost Guard jurisdictions.
