Afternoon tea was introduced to the UK in the mid-1800s. This was a formal affair for the upper class, who would dress in their finest, gather in parlors or gardens, and enjoy tea, sandwiches, and pastries served to them from a cart. ‘High’ tea refers to a sit-down meal eaten by members of the working class at their kitchen tables.
