Winter Lecture- Blacks of the Chesapeake’s Campaign to Preserve a Local Legacy: Elktonia, Carr’s & Sparrow’s Heritage Preservation Project

Join us virtually for our annual winter lecture series hosted over Zoom. You will be challenged to question and to learn by engaging speakers on eight diverse topics including listening to accounts and memories about famous beach venues owned and operated by Elizabeth Carr Smith and her sister Florence Carr Sparrow during the 1930s-1970s with a focus on music, entertainment and leisure during times of segregation.

Presenter: Vince Leggett | Founder and President of the Blacks of the Chesapeake Foundation

Vince Leggett is founder and president of the Blacks of the Chesapeake Foundation (BOCF), whose work brings to light the maritime history of African Americans in the Chesapeake Bay. The foundation maintains a collection of records, artifacts, genealogies, and more than 40,000 photographs representing 200 years of African American life and work in the seafood and maritime industries.
