SYMPOSIUM 1, November 15, 2022: Saving Cultural Heritage in Crisis
Moderator Greg Faller and panelists Corine Wegener and Ihor Posyvailo will discuss the complexity of issues involved in decisions around preserving elements of cultural heritage. This session will explore questions around culture, institutions, advocacy, and cultural elements that drive the decision making process to aid in the preservation of cultural heritage. They will illustrate this fascinating discussion using one historical and one current example of cultural preservation.
Moderator Greg Faller is Towson University Associate Dean. Panelist Corine Wegener is Director of the Smithsonian Cultural Rescue Initiative. Ms. Wegner will discuss saving cultural heritage. Panelist Ihor Poshyvailo, PhD, is Director of the Special Ukraine Cultural Preservation with the Ministry of Culture and Information of Ukraine. Dr. Poshyvailo will discuss the timely issue of saving the cultural heritage in Ukraine.

SYMPOSIUM 2, November 17, 2022: Keeping Culture Alive
Moderator Bea Fuller, and panelists Victoria Smalls and Yolanda Alcorta, will explore two examples of successful cultural heritage preservation, including the Gullah Geechee culture and Maya weaving. Panelist is Executive Director at the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor National Heritage Area. Ms. Smalls will discuss the Gullah Geechee people who have traditionally resided in the coastal areas and the sea islands of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. Panelist Yolanda Alcorta is a textile curator who will discuss the cultural significance of weaving and textiles among cultures of Maya descent. Anthropologist and Archaeologist Katharine W Fernstrom, PhD, will provide introductions.
