Medart Galleries is a family-owned and -operated business. While serving in the Navy some 56 years ago, William Radosevic was assigned to NATO Headquarters in Naples, Italy, where he met his beautiful Neapolitan bride, Annamaria. As they traveled throughout Europe, Bill befriended many artists and began collecting original oil paintings.
The night before the couple’s son Frank was born, Bill’s old shipmate Jim Fletcher was visiting and discussing career options. Jim decided to return to Italy to seek employment and continue his education. A partnership formed, with Jim selling art to the American forces in Italy and exporting oil paintings to Bill in the states.
Jim designed the original Medart logo, which shows the Mediterranean Sea and the boot of Italy on an artist’s palette. With Frank and then daughter Teresa in tow, Bill and Annamaria wholesaled original Italian oil paintings to art galleries along the East Coast.
In 1979, they opened their first retail location on Andrews Air Force Base in Camp Springs. In 1985, they opened a gallery in Bright Center West in Owings, moving to the Dunkirk Market Place in 1992. Over the summer, Medart Galleries relocated to a larger Dunkirk space at 10735 Town Center Boulevard, behind the Dunkirk Giant.
Children Frank and Teresa planned for other careers, but both loved their family business too much to leave. Frank earned a Bachelor of Fine Art in photography at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C., while working full time as a custom framer at Medart. Teresa — now Schrodel — uses her minor in public relations and marketing from Frostburg State University at Medart.
Jim and Barbara eventually retired from teaching on military bases around the globe.
