Filling the Cupboard for Old Mother Hubbard
With Thanksgiving just around the corner, Anne Arundel County pets — and their human companions in need of a little help — have a reason to give thanks.
On Thursday, November 15, the Anne Arundel County SPCA inaugurates a Pet Food Bank at the shelter on 1815 Bay Ridge Avenue in Annapolis. The food bank opens every other Thursday from 9am to 1pm. Welcome to withdraw pet supplies — including food, cat litter, treats and bones — is any Anne Arundel County animal owner who meets the low-income requirements.
“Our grand opening was timed intentionally for the Thanksgiving holiday to help out needy families and their pets,” said volunteer coordinator Kim Teter.
“Most donations are for cats and dogs, but we have funding for supplies to help other critters like hamsters, rabbits and birds,” she explained. “Basically, we can help any pet that is legally allowed in your home.”
The Pet Food Bank was started with $5,000 from Banfield Charitable Trust, based in Oregon, which makes grants to help people in need keep their pets.
The SPCA is partnering with the Anne Arundel County Food Bank to keep the bank stocked.
