From Broadway with Love

One Calvert County concert series has raised more than $30,000 for breast health — with no signs of relenting.

The Spotlight Music Series showcases local musicians and singers while raising money for the Sheldon E. Goldberg Center for Breast Care at CalvertHealth. This year’s Broadway extravaganza includes songs from Beauty and the Beast, My Fair Lady, Phantom of the Opera, West Side Story and many more.

The relentless force behind the music is Ramona Crowley Goldberg, a CalvertHealth Foundation Board member and wife of the center’s namesake, Sheldon Goldberg, who died on a fly-fishing vacation in 2011.

Sheldon Goldberg, a hard-working and caring breast surgeon, was inspired to open the center in 2010. After his untimely passing, one of his patients, Robin Henshaw, created the music series to support her doctor’s dream. Henshaw herself died from breast cancer in 2016.

Crowley Goldberg now breathes life into the series with old favorites and new talent. “They all are gifted, selfless individuals who feel honored to support the Center for Breast Care,” she says.

Emily Bowen Mudd is rehearsing for her seventh year as a Spotlight star. Mudd, a graduate of Calvert High School, studied English and Music at William and Mary College. Back home, she befriended Henshaw — and her Spotlight Series — in 2012.

This year, the singer dedicates her performance to Henshaw.

“Robin was a great friend and mentor of mine, and I miss her very much,” the soprano says. “She was a stellar teacher and performer, and I was so fortunate to know her in her final years.”
