Hot Sox Field Still Making History
If you see a ghost at Anne Arundel County’s newest ball field, don’t shriek and run away. Instead, ask the ghost about his story, because it’s sure to be a great one.
The county has just bought Wilson Park, the home of Hot Sox Field, from a family who inherited the Galesville farm of a freed slave ancestor, Henry Wilson.
In 1928, the farm added a baseball field, where South County baseball lovers traveled on Sundays to cheer the Galesville Hot Sox, one of the semi-pro black baseball teams in the local Chesapeake Independent League.
The league was so good that white players aspired to play in it. The team integrated in 1967 and continued to play ball until 1997.
House speaker Michael Busch, a multi-sport athlete, threw the first pitch at the field’s dedication on Sunday, May 19. The county wants to restore the field to its glory days of the early 20th century.
Who knows what history is still to be made at the Galesville Hot Sox Field?
