Keep an Eye on the Sky

As fall kicks into gear, our feathered friends will be changing feeding habits and looking for additional sources of food for energy. The coming of fall also signals birds of prey that it is time for their annual southward migration.
The migration of hawks and falcons in our area begins in late August and ends in early December, although the greatest number of raptors passes through our area in October. Keep your eyes to the sky and you may just see an American kestrel, red-tailed hawk, peregrine falcon, merlin or Cooper’s hawk migrating through.
For a close-up view of birds of prey, join Wild Bird Center of Annapolis at one of its fall events. Liz Smith, from Raptor’s Eye, will be presenting her owls, hawks and falcons on Saturday, October 5 and Saturday, November 2, 10am to 2pm. Bring your family and your camera to learn about these magnificent birds.
