Kids Dig into Reading
School’s out! Children yell and jump for joy, getting pumped for a fun summer of beaches, lazy days and reading. Anne Arundel and Calvert Libraries are helping kids Dig into Summer Reading, a national initiative to make books part of summer’s fun.
Anne Arundel and Calvert libraries are spicing summer reading with jugglers, mad scientists, magicians and puppets.
“This is an opportunity for kids to have fun with reading,” says Beverly Izzi, Calvert Library’s youth services coordinator. “They get the chance to read whatever they want.”
Kids get free rein on book, which can be checked out from the library or read at home. Each child gets a reading log to keep track of summer reading.
To entice kids to read more, the libraries offer chances to win prizes including goodies out of a treasure chest, flower seeds, baseball tickets, iTunes gift cards and family passes to Ripley’s Believe it or Not and the Baltimore Museum of Industry.
In Calvert, once readers complete their game board — which includes missions such as asking a librarian for help or reading outside — they enter a prize drawing.
Anne Arundel’s challenges vary by age. Kids need to read five to six books to get a chance for a prize. Teens solve puzzles on Facebook to win prizes (www.facebook.com/AACPLteen).
