Little Places Do Big Things

The seven shopping carts donated by Dickinson Jewelers customers early this month are long gone.
“All of the food collected by Dickinson’s has already been distributed to local food pantries,” said Jacqueline Hahn of End Hunger in Calvert County. “That’s how fast it happens and how great the need is.”
So great that End Hunger, housed at Chesapeake Church in Huntingtown, is distributing 500,000 pounds to Calvert County families and food pantries this Saturday at FoodStock ’12.
Dickinson’s 1,360 pounds was gathered in celebration of 55 years in business in the community. End Hunger in Calvert County, which helps feed 850 families every week, was “the obvious choice,” said the jeweler’s Alison Setzer.
End Hunger is the obvious choice for many groups seeking to give back in ways small and large — from Calvert County 4-H, which donated 450 pounds of pork from their livestock projects, to the Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival, which this year presented End Hunger a $5,000 check.
End Hunger, gathers and distributes food to ease the burden of the 4.4 percent of Calvert’s 89,256 people who live below the poverty line — and many more who struggle to make ends meet. With a $500 Shopping Matters grant from Share our Strength’s No Kid Hungry Campaign, this week End Hunger is also teaching low-income shoppers how to buy groceries on a budget.
On August 25 families in need pick up food at the End Hunger Warehouse at Calvert Industrial Park  off Rt. 231 from 8:30am to noon.
