Kudos to Vest, Jurkovic and Harley

Dear Bay Weekly:

I want to commend Louise Vest for a superb article on the good works of a unique young man, Raphael Jurkovic and his beloved harlequin Great Dane, Harley Davidson ["Bay Life: Harley Visits the Nursing Home," May 18-24].

She has captured the atmosphere and essence of the "impoverished land" of the lonely, the sick and the aging in a nursing home and the joy that Raphael and Harley bring to them. God bless them.

Raphael is my son's best friend. He brings goodness and joy wherever he goes. Thank you for this warm, loving true story.

-Meg Mitchell, Annapolis

Thanks from SPCA

Dear Bay Weekly:

The SPCA of Anne Arundel County wishes to express its gratitude and appreciation to the entire cadre of Walk for the Animals' 2000 supporters who helped make this year's annual event the best ever. So far, we've raised about $120,000 to help care for and shelter over 5,000 homeless shelter animals.

We extend a huge 'bow-wow' for the support of the 1,200 Walk participants and their 600 furry four-legged friends who were not deterred by the rainy and cloudy weather. We enjoyed seeing you and your special companion at the park.

A special 'cat's meow' goes to our 180 dedicated Walk volunteers, veterinary professionals and Quiet Waters Park staff who helped the event run smoothly. We could not have done it without you.

And we offer a great big thank you to the 'best doggone' Walk sponsors - over 90 local businesses (including Bay Weekly) and local veterinarians. You provided us with monetary donations, prizes and donations of in-kind services to help defray Walk 2000 expenses. We are touched by your generosity and grateful for you support.

All of our Walk supporters have given the shelter animals a second, and in some cases even a third, chance at finding a permanent, caring home and a happy life.

-JoAnn Lamp,
SPCA Volunteer Event Organizer
