Ride the Haiti 80
For bicycle riders in the Haiti 80, your pleasure in speed and endurance bring hope and help to the school children in the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, where more than half the people live on less than one dollar a day. La Resurrection School in Gros Morne has been under the wing of St. Martins-in-the-Field Episcopal Church in Severna Park for 28 years. A newer bright idea, only two years old, puts some spin on that partnership.
Cyclists, from families to endurance riders, take to paved routes from the 2.4-mile B&A perimeter trail to the 44-kilometer (27.7-mile) Haiti Half 80, to the signature Haiti 80 at 88 kilometers (55 miles) to the 62.5-mile Metric Century. All rides use the B&A trail, some adding a Kinder Park lap and the BWI Trail.
Registration is $40; six racers educate one child for one year. Sponsors are invited to contribute $100 to $1,000, all tax-deductible: Race Sat. Sept. 21, starting at 7am. Ice cream social follows (noon-2pm) at Severna Park Community Center: 410-647-6248; www.haiti80bikeride.com.
