Connect History to Life

Racial justice essay contest

Exploring the Civil Rights Movement and racial justice to find personal connections could win Anne Arundel teens $5,000. Their challenge: Write a 700- to 1000-word essay exploring the connection between a past event and a present-day issue of race and class, reflecting how history informs our times and their lives.

The competition is part of The Equal Justice Initiative’s Community Remembrance Project to recognize the victims of lynching with historical markers, soil collections and a national memorial.

Open to ninth- to 12th-graders, this scholarship contest coincides with the September 7, 2019, dedication of a historical marker in Annapolis to memorialize five African American lynching victims murdered between 1875 and 1911, along with others who remain unknown. At least 40 African Americans died in racial lynchings in Maryland between 1875 and 1933.
