South County Democrats Help Fill SCAN Shelves
The South County Democratic Club responded to President Barack Obama’s call for a National Day of Service on January 19 by organizing a food drive for the South County Assistance Network, SCAN.
We were honored to have our District 5 Congressman, Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, join us to deliver food items.
Nearly 90 friends of the South County Democratic Club collected food for SCAN, located at St. James Parish in Lothian. Currently SCAN provides supplemental food to about 200 families each month, and at this time they needed several staples — peanut butter, jelly, and muffin mix — and were low on pork and beans, pasta and soups.
The club also purchased 100 jars of peanut butter, 100 jars of jelly and 100 muffin mixes as a wholesale donation by Shady Side Market’s owners, Scott and Skip Catterton. Renno’s Market owner Mohan Grover provided frozen meats and other staples.
By the end of the afternoon, the South County Democratic Club’s donations filled SCAN’s shelves with overflow boxes and stacked crates were on tables and the floor. Donations are always needed and can be dropped at St. James Parish at any time by following the signs to SCAN.
